"Tell me, sir. If you found Rie, what exactly would you do with her?"
Talômi was startled by the question. He looked up at Nurumaiel. She seemed to really mean the question.
"Do with her? Nobody can ever do anything with Rie. I guess I'd just want to talk to her, try to understand why she left. Really understand, I mean, not just my guesses. And, I mean..." He broke off, clutching the handle of his mug tightly. He didn't want to be angry, but thinking about this made him angry. "I'd ask her why she abandoned me, after I did all that I could not to leave her," he finished haltingly, and though he tried, he could not take the bite out of his voice, or the bitterness out of his words. He flinched a little as he heard himself characterize Rie as the one who was abandoning him, while all he ever did was "leave" her. He bit his lip and felt a warm flush rise into his cheeks. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that. It just hurts still."
He rubbed the back of his neck and felt the tight muscles. "I don't know what she thinks I want to do, but I just want to know the truth. It'll hurt, I know that, to hear her say whatever she has to say, but then my own wounds might close. But if she doesn't want to talk, I'll just leave."
There was a pause, and he laughed. "No, I guess I don't mean that. I'd probably stay here and hope that she changed her mind. I've always been like that with Rie, you understand? I don't like to leave her. I'm the younger twin, and I was never the stronger twin, but I always feel like she needs me to be whole. Kind--" He stopped and a full blush came into his face. "That was about to sound stupid. I'll stop now."
