Rie gazed out at the night sky, at the star Eärendil that Pio was pointing out. When first she looked at it, it seemed cold and far away, like everything else in her life--her family, her home, her future. She didn't notice the rush of fresh air, or even the little chill in the air through her gloom. But then Pio began to speak.
"Hail Eärendil, of mariners most renowned..."
Rie stood transfixed as Pio spoke these words that she had heard so long ago, so many times, and then looked at the star again. Stories that her mother had told her came back in a rush, and suddenly the star looked less like a distant, cruel false hope and more like the light of a lantern in a friendly home, telling her that it friends and warmth are not far away, if only she would keep going for a little while longer. Once more tears stung her eyes, but it was no longer from terror. She smiled gratefully at Pio, and, finding words insufficient, embraced her.
