Hobbit survival:

I confess I like the idea of Wood Elves being available to assist them on the banks of the Anduin. My attitude may be purely selfish, though, because it dovetails nicely with What Happens Later (in The Fairy Wife) where the hobbits are mildly familiar with, and somewhat comfortable about the idea of, elves.

(Like I said, selfish. So shoot me.)
