Actually, it may be you that is missing the point of this thread. Gollum was definitely totally enthralled by the Ring, but beyond his constant yearning for it, it did not direct his intentions. In fact, he voiced such intentions as "make them pay" - intentions that had nothing to do with Sauron other than that the Dark Lord was included in 'they'.
In short, Gollum DID have a say in the actions he took to regain the Ring, except that he couldn't stop looking for it.
