The little creature cowered, moving back on all fours. "Ah--do not hurt me--I am a cousin, cousin. "
It smiled, bearing teeth that didn't look so friendly.
Suddenly it tilted its head quizzically. The holes in the front of its face, which Frodo assumed to be its nose, twitched. It sniffed.
"Mmmm. 'Nother hobbit. 'Nother hobbit!"
Frodo watched in amazement and confusion as the creature flashed a toothy grin again and almost danced toward the water. It hopped in, and with a splash, it was gone.
Frodo looked quizzically up at Rose.
