‘Get up Brytta! We are under attack!’
Aldwulf knelt down beside the dying guard. The man’s pulse grew weaker, the blood slowing down to a trickle. ‘Draw your sword, Brytta, and rally the others,’ he said, loosening the collar of Hama’s tunic. The knife was deeply imbedded; there was no hope of saving him. ‘I’ll stay with him. He is almost gone.’
Brytta stood quickly and shouted out orders to Liol, Rochil, and Heldór. Swords drawn, they advanced on Fréa’s band prepared to defend themselves aggressively.
Aldwulf closed the fading eyes of the fallen man of the Mark. Hama gave one last quiet sigh and then let go his spirit. Aldwulf bent his head near the other’s, whispering. ‘You were a good man led wrong and a faithful warrior. May the grace of the Valar be with you now.’ Then he drew his blade and ran up the small rise toward Archim . . .
