I definitely agree with you. Sam and Frodo had separate roles and separate gifts, but both were equally needed. Neither could have been successful if they had tried to go it alone. This is why I also see red when I read the writings of many critics, who waste great amounts of time arguing whether Sam or Frodo is the "true hero" of the book. They just don't get it!!! (Or maybe they had to write something to qualify for getting tenure and this is the best they could come up with!)
