The purpose of the story is to: Discover the cause of the disappearances, determine whether Eodwine is alive or dead; if alive, to attempt a rescue. In either case, to report back to Master Brandybuck what they learn. If the rescue party is able to without risk to the entire party, to do anything that might be done to end the trouble in the North.
This means we will know the story is over when: The (remaining members of the) party reports back to Master Doderic Brandybuck, cousin of Master Meriadoc, and Second to the Master, what is in the North, what they have done about it, and to produce Master Eodwine or evidence of his death.
Starting Location: The Prancing Pony in Bree; it is in Master Meriadoc's mind that the search party must be made up of Men and Hobbits; Elves and Dwarves are not out of the question if any happen to be available and willing.
Likely destination: The Hills of Evendim, including Lake Evendim, and farther north as needed.
