Tolkien did use alot of metaphors, but I dont think he was using one when he said "his wings spread".. it wouldn't make sense. I beleive that they actually had wings but could not fly. Some people say that is a stupid idea, because why would they have wings for no reason? I can just guess that they used them to bring themselves into the air for a short time.. like a bird that is too heavy to fly but can still use its wings to go into the air for a while.
