M.Martinez wrote what I thought was an amazingly good article "Gil-Galad was an Elven King" where he mentions some aspects of the three I had not fully considered .
I will try and summarize a bit w/ no preconception that I can do his essay justice.
1] The 3 he contends were working passively w/ their time stopping functions even when not being worn.[e.g. The fellowships experience of the newness of the sun in Lothlorien [a 2nd not 3rd age sun] and
2] that the Elves were being rather decietful w/ the numenoreans re: the cause of the War of the Elves and Sauron -not telling them they had conspired w/ Sauron to make Elven time stoppers
[their ultimate passion and obsession-trying in effect to be little vala] and that originally Gil-Galad would not countenance their use -but after their death Elrond and Galadriel went ahead and used them actively.
I actually should reread it to get a better handle - but I thought it was a masterful job of pulling many disparate threads scattered over 20 mor so books together.
W/ the #rings and Elven Politics getting special treatment.
