It seems to me that your view of Elves is not consistant with Tolkien's books. Does Eol the Dark elf ring a bell? He worked with metals. The Noldor were excellent metal workers too. These Elves must have used the same material to burn in their furnaces as the Dwarves used in theirs. Therefore I'd say that Dwarves and Elves are in the same boat when it comes to industry.
