Findorfin, welcome to the Road to Rivendell! We try to stay Tolkien-focused, or at least hobbit-and-elf focused. There are plenty of tools and themes avaiable to help us along in that direction.

There's a link about pedometers on this thread. I can move it to the firt post so it will be more accessable. But you don't necesarily need one; Frodo didn't have one! You can estimate based on time, or drive the route or use your local maps; there's lots of options. (That said, my ilttle blue gadget cost ten bucks at Walmart, but I'd recommend getting a better one at a sports shop.)

The important thing is to get out and start "tramping" (as Frodo would say.) Enjoy, and welcome to the road!
