Valar: Higher order Maiar, spirits like the Maia

The Valar and the Maiar are both groups of Ainur, which are Angels. There are also Umaiar, which are evil Maiar (anti-Maia or ex-maia).

There are also creatures that defy clasification. Tom Bombadil and Ungoliant (sp) for example, they may be Ainur, or just something, powers-that-be sort of thing. Along the same lines there are Eagles and Hounds, talking beings which are sometimes stated or suggested to be Maiar, sometimes not.
