Leprechauns are neither hobbit nor dwarf nor elf. They are not a creation of Tolkien at all. Actually, if you look back at many legends, elves are also little mischievous sprites that liked to be mean to weary travelers, tricking them into trouble like no other. So, in a way, leprechauns could be considered elves or sprites. But to me, they're just a legend and a fun one at that (teasing the nephews has always been my favorite pasttime.
