If he was not lying there dying it is quite possible he never would have told Aragorn of his attempt to take the Ring from Frodo. Assuming that the other events took place as they were written he most likely would have joined with Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli in their hunt for Merry and Pippen. Personally I think it would be interesting to see his reaction to his Father's death and Aragorn's eventual claim to Gondor's throne. I believe Frodo makes some comment later on that he would have supported it but I'm not sure if that's the case or not. After all, there is no "I would have followed you...my king" dialog in the book.
