Well, Frodo actually claimed that he was related to Pippin, Merry, and Sam because of a goofy blood brother thing they did one day when they were all really bored. They each cut the end of their finger so that it bled a bit and rubbed the fingers together. The others just roll their eyes whenever Frodo explains how they are related since he's convinced that the blood brother thing is legitimate.
