Okay, it was Fatty Bolger who was captured, and he escaped when they went to a bag factory by jumping into an empty dog food bag (the owners of the bed & breakfast they were planning to stop at had HUGE dogs who ate more than any you've ever seen) and was thrown onto a truck. He woke up on the racks at your local Zamzows, and he wandered off to find the rest of the gang.
