As a substitute for troops or bands, why not something like horde, outfit, assemblage, drove, multitude, throng or simply mass? They all mean about the same thing.

BTW: bevy or covey are groups of...

But that gaming stuff is just a random writer's imagination, right? Right.
One concern I have about the Witch King is his helmet: I think Mouth of Sauron when I see it. The big gaping maw in the...

I was just looking at the Visual Companion and the Picture book for RotK and we see Cirith Ungol a few times (a run down tower, perhaps impressive when the Gondorians manned it, butnow ramshackle)....

Eomer, Gandalf and the Rohirrim's charge is a magical scene because of the look and soundtrack behind it.
But I love the opening of FotR:EE, the "Concerning Hobbits" section. It is just so well put...

From my reading of the Silmarillion, and recent listen to the audiobook before going to sleep, I have to concur that Turin's role is effectively finished as of his death. What comes later has not...

I don't think the average moviegoer will even know there WAS a Saruman/Grima scene cut out. Probably less than 10% of the viewing audience - I'd wager less than 5% - even read online movie news....

Well, in fifteen years, CT probably won't be living, and his somewhat stringent policies may not be enforced so much. Don't get me wrong - I think what he's done with his father's work is nothing...

I don't think there is any racism per se in the books, but simply a sort of "Western" view of things. In the West, the terrors either come from over the western waters (not really likely in old...

Here's how I figured it.

There are 15 Valar, but really, sixof them are lesser, so I only counted the Aratar among them. And the ninth of the Aratar was Melkor (there are eight on the side of the...

Tolkien repeatedly states his books are about applicability, i.e. you can apply the lesson of the book to many things. Meaning, there is no overriding metaphor, nor definite allegory to cling to.
