Tolkien Reply

Hobbits loved boasting about their ancestors, and I suppose that's as close to reading for pleasure as you can get.

White Tree Welcome Greybeard

Welcome! Glad you decided to join us! I'm a relatively new fan myself, though I am inspired by Tolkien's works. Hope you enjoy your stay! :smokin:

White Tree Third Dark Lord, or Melkor's Return?

I've heard it said that, according to prophecy, before the Battle of Battles, Melkor was to return.

I've wondered myself if this was meant to be taken literally, or metaphorically. In other...

Isn't is strange how Professor's use of the language holds up even now?

If he were alive today, as Professor John Ronald Reuel "I'm-so-not-immortal" Tolkien, I'd like to think he'd be proud of...

I don't think he was lying in denying allegory, like you said, but I also think that his works are fantasy stories with "real" figures in them. The reason I put "real" in quotation marks is because,...

But weren't at least some dragons bred by Morgoth and Sauron? Because Dark Tongue could apply here if that's so.

White Tree Reply to Inziladun

But he must have picked up at least a little Khuzdul, I mean, he single-handedly besieged and conquered a dwarf king's mountain fortress. He might know a word or two at the very least.

Of course,...

White Tree Languages Smaug spoke?

When I was reading The Hobbit, I became curious as to what languages Smaug spoke. Dragons don't seem to have much of a culture or a relationship with other species (a positive one at least), so how...

Thanks for welcoming me, guys :) I'm glad this place is still active. I also think I'll be using the smoking emoticon a lot :smokin:

White Tree Hi guys :)

Hi. I'm new here, but I want to tell you a little about me:

I come from under the hill, and under the hills and over the hills my paths led. And through the air, I am he that walks unseen. I am...
