Which line is the worst?
Hi everybody.
I'm not sure whether there has been a similar topic, but I was wondering which line(s) you find most annoying, un-Tolkien-like or stupid.
My personal favourites of stupid lines are:
'If you want him, come and claim him!'
'Let's hunt some orc' (Aragorn wouldn't say that)
'Ride hard, don't look back'
|
It's kinda dumb, but I love this part of TTT:
Gimli: "Toss me!"
Aragorn: *Look*
Gimli: "You'll have to toss me."
*pause*
"Don't tell the elf."
*falls to the ground hysterically laughing, because she is too easily amused*
|
Yeah, it's a bit dumb but I'd have to admit it's a bit funny =)
|
By the way, when is TTT coming out on VHS and DVD in the states?
|
When Galadriel says "Do not let your hearts be troubled", etc. she looks up in this sort of dreamy way, and I always want to smack her.
|
I don't like that “come and claim him“ line either but what really annoys me is that when Gimli and others are in Lorien and he insults the elves... isn't the languange of dwarves very secret? How can Aragorn comment: "That wasn't so courteous" (or something...) he shouldn't be able to understand what Gimli said!
|
I don't know if this counts as a line, but in Lothlorien, when Galadriel is speaking with the Fellowship, Celeborn is looking at her with a I-want-to-throw-you-down-on-the-rug-and-shag-you-silly look on his face that just makes me want to slap him.
|
Wasn't there already a thread on this? My personal favourite has to be "You look terrible". Yes, that is all Elves think about.
|
Ug. I won't be able to watch that scene without laughing now. Thanks, Finwe.
I think that whole exchange between Aragorn and Arwen in Towers (you know, that dream scene...) is absolutely horrible. I mean honestly....
Gimme a minute, I'll be back with more.
Oh, and Welcome to the Downs, dancing spawn of Ungoliant!!! Enjoy being dead.

Mainly the Galadriel bits. The gift-giving scene made me want to hit her round the head. In fact, I don't think I liked pretty much anything that she said. Except for the prologue with which I find not a single fault, and some of the lines she spoke when she met with the fellowship.

Could not be a well know profanity in elvish? People often pick up the swear words first when dealing with other cultures. I'm sure there's someone out there that can answer this one.
H.C.
|
Okay, did anyone else notice this? In the gift giving scene on the extended DVD when Galadriel is talking to Pippin she says something like; 'Do not let your heart be troubled, young Peregrin Took', but it sounds like she says 'Peregrin Pook'.
I don't know about you, but I always laugh at that part.
|

I'm sure there's someone out there that can answer this one.

Well just because no on knows the language of the Dwarves doesn't mean they also wouldn't know the profanity of the Dwarves!
I mean I know a FEW curses other in the language I speak so why wouldn't Aragorn know Dwarf cursing when he hears it? Let's also remember everyone Aragorn has travelled extensively through the lands of Middle-Earth and through all his long travels I am sure he has heard some rather colorful wording so I am not surprised he understood Gimli...
And btw I am almost 100% positive it was in his own language that Gimli was cursing Haldir and his brothers with!
|
Worst lines for me are:
"...You have elected the way of pain..." -spoken by Saruman when he and Gandalf have their little wizards' duel!
"You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring!" -spoken by Elrond
Those two lines are truly cringeworthy!!!!
|

|
"let's hunt some orc".. Yes that is bad..
And in TTT when Theoden says "It has begun" in Helms deep, and im always like, "NO! you dont say?"
And in Fotr when Gandalf says "YOu cannot pass!" i feel like walking into the movie at that time and just walking in front of gandalf when he is holding up the stick and saying "I think he is going to anyway, so what i think you should do now is RUN!"
|
Thanks Sapphire_Flame, I will. :) Another annoying scene in Lorien: Sam isn't pleased with his gift... he wants a dagger! Isn't that a bit rude from so nice and kind of shy hobbit?!
|
"If you want him, come and claim him," arwen to the Nazgul!
|
I think the worst line was Gandalf's-

quote:
Swords are no more use here!

In Moria when the Balrog chases them yet in The Two Towers Gandalf uses his sword to fight the bugger!
|
Well... does Gandalf have any other option in such a case? In the extended FotR Bilbo is wondering where Frodo has gone and why doesn't he open the door- just horrible!!
|
Yeah, lazy sod. Bilbo's lazy and Gandalf is a glory hog!
Seriously though, the wrost line is Elrond's- "You shall be known as the Fellowship of the Ring!"
So tackily put by a great actor The music behind it made it bad too.
|
I personally wanted to throw things at the screen every time Elrond said "Morrrrrrdor". But that's just me...

quote:
By the way, when is TTT coming out on VHS and DVD in the states?

The theatrical edition will be out on August 26 if I'm not mistaken, followed by the SE on November 18.

quote:
I think that whole exchange between Aragorn and Arwen in Towers (you know, that dream scene...) is absolutely horrible.

I completely agree, Sapphire. I wanted to throw the entire popcorn bucket at them.
|

quote:
I completely agree, Sapphire. I wanted to throw the entire popcorn bucket at them.

I thoroughly agree with that; luckily, my friends are always able to restrain me from hurling things at the screen. Either that, or they stand up and start yelling things with me: "SHUT UP!! GET BACK TO THE REAL MOVIE!!! I WANNA SEE SOME FIGHTIN'!!!"
The lines that really irritate me are the ones that are completely obvious, like, "This is Sting. You've seen it before." It's stupid, obvious things like that, that cause brain anurisms.
|
OH GOD! And any time Frodo says "Sam" i just want to slap the bugger!
|
Why, oh why does Galadriel say: "I give you the light of Erendil." It's Eärendil! (yes I'm a perfectionist in these things...) Also Saruman has a pronunciation error in his "cuiva nwalca carnirassė..."
|
*BLINKS*
Well, I thought it was good... But, that is probably because i was a little star struck by Cate Blanchett...
|
"If you want him come and claim him"
-Arwen Fellowship of the Ring
definitely something an elf would NOT say...
It was the corniest line in the movie...
And Galadriel's laugh in the extended DVD, when she gives the Fellowship their gifts kind of freaks me out...i don't know why...
|

quote:
The lines that really irritate me are the ones that are completely obvious, like, "This is Sting. You've seen it before." It's stupid, obvious things like that, that cause brain anurisms.

Ooh, then you must not like Legolas very much... "Orcs!" "Crebain from Dunland!" "Goblins!" "The Ring must be destroyed!" Eh, just foolin' with ya, Sapphire. I don't like obvious lines very much either, but I despise the scenes with Arwen, especially the ones with her in TTT. I don't mind the one with her and Elrond, but I don't like the dream sequence part.
|
All those times when Frodo says "Oh Sam!" also annoy me! I mean, each time he says it, he looks extremely constipated. I'm starting to wonder whether Sam remembered to bring the Ex-Lax!
Another annoying moment was when Cate Blanchett completely messed up the Elvish names. For Eru's sake, it's Earendil, NOT Erendiel! And another thing! It's the daggers of the Noldor, NOT Noldorin! Peter Jackson needs a good talking-to.
|
If we are talking now about pronunciation (and about speaking Elvish and so on correctly)... Frodo says Mordor like [mo:do:] though it should be said like [mordor]! Annoying line: run! (said by Gandalf in Moria... first he lingers talking something about that the Fellowship can't fight against the balrog and then... oh dear, we have to hurry now!)
|
All of Legolas's lines are HORRIBLE!!!!! And EXTREMELY Corny
|
Some of Legolas's lines are okay (the briiliant archery/fighting bits by him make up for the crummy ones ). But it's really Arwen that bugs me the most, of the elves anyway.
Theoden actually irritates me quite a bit; he just seems really stuck up. Like at Helm's Deep, all these men are getting killed by the orcs and Theoden says, "Is this it? Is this all Saruman can do?" He just seems really aloof and not in touch with his people. And that line, "So it begins." is horrible beyond reason.
|
Oh, Theoden... he seemed a bit dim. I know full well that he wasn't, but my friends and I loved to laugh at him for 1) having to ask Gamling who he was, and 2) having to ask Aragorn where Gondor was.
Oh, the joy of twisting lines...
|
lol, Meela.
|
I think the worse line in TTT is when Sam crawls over to Frodo in the cave and says. "Mr. Frodo, you can do it." I don't know why it irritates me, maybe because I want to reply with "Nicorett can help." because I have seen that commercial too many times. Also I think it is because I am reminded of that "You can do it!!" guy with the Mexican accent in Water Boy.
Back to the Gimli cursing thing. I think in that scene in the book he said, "Plague on the stiff necks of elves." And Aragorn replied, "Plague on the stiff necks of drawves." Only it was in the common tongue. I am probably wrong because I have only read the Fellowship once.
|
Bless Theoden... he is CLASSIC. Who would we laugh at if he werent there.. oh i know, Frodo and Sam. Nevermind, I will always find someone to laugh at.
|
Hey! Theoden is great! You pups just don't get the "heaviness" of his lines! Nope...nothing can top "What do your elf eyes see?"
