Lotr

Hey everyone, I have been trying to read the Simarillion (sorry if I spelt it wrong), but it is so long and personally speaking, has just a little bit too much information but I suppose that's what it's for.

The Silmarillion was, to me, a very interesting and informative book. It explains much on everything about Arda and its inhabitants, and how they all "came to be". I would say the Sil is a must read, but that's just me .

Here's a good thread to for Silmarillion discussion, opinions, and reviews, as well as the Novices & Newcomers forum.

And welcome to the Downs, both of you. Have fun being dead.

Don't feel to bad, I've been trying to get through it for a year now! Don't get me wrong, it's great- but I keep getting the characters and places mixed up! Thank goodness for the index/glossary at the back!

Well, some people have trouble reading LotR, so here's a thread with some advice for reading LotR A few questions about a new reader. A lot of that advice can be used for the Sil too.

Well, I strongly advise you not to rush it. Take your time and read at your own pace. If you need to, reread some parts to help clarify it for yourself. And if you feel you are not ready, put it down and come back when you feel ready, even if it's years before you feel ready. And yes, there are a lot of places and names to remember, so if you don't remember a lot of it the first time or if you get confused, don't feel bad. If you read it again and again, it will begin to become clear and you'll find it easier to remember characters/places. Also, if you talk about it (like here at the BD for instance) it wil help too. Well, good luck.

Hope that helps.
