I have read LOTR and am about to start the Sillmarillion, so I was wondering if it talks about Thorongil? He was only mentioned in about 2 pages of the Appendices in The Return of The King, and I want to know more about him.

The story of Aragorn's adventures as Thorngil are not told in the Silmarillion, but you can find some information about him in Unfinished Tales, Part Four III - The Palantiri.

Thanks, I just figured out that Thorongil was Aragorn when I took a Quiz about Nicknames =). I always thought he was part of the Islari.

Thorongil was a nom du guerre of Aragorn. The two pages that you mention are one of the few instances where we get details of the far wanderings of Aragorn that he mentions in the Lord of the Rings.
He was a captian of great renown under Steward Ecthelion II.
Thats when he traveled to Umbar and destroyed a great part of the fleet of the Corsairs. That experience would come in handy later on.
It also shows that Aragorn took part in the family naval tradition. (Though it seemed to have missed quite a few generations back up north.)

Unfortunately, thats about it for details on Thorongil. That, and the fact that he was also in Rohan under that name as well.

But in Gondor we see the beginnings of Denethor's covetousness of the rule of Gondor. Thorongil was a rival to him in the eyes of the people and his father. Thorongil also tried to counsel against trusting Saruman, and instead put forward Gandalf.

Denethor was just as glad to see the back of Thorongil.

Cause he didn't like ppl to interfere in his doings. He saw himself more like a King than the Steward of the King. He though himself wise enough to rule Gondor himself.

And he saw himself as being of more noble blood than any possible claimant to the actual throne.

Still, its seems weird that he would not like Thorongil if he had helped his father with so many things. And Gandalf never did anything bad to him either.

But isn''t it often true that when someone helps or is very friendly to one's parents, the child sometimes considers that the person is usurping their place in the family. Could very well be that he was jealous of Aragorn's assistance.

It is speculated that the reason Thorongil left before Ecthelion II died. I've always been interested in the raid on Umbar led by Thorongil under the orders of Ecthelion II, and therefore had glory in battle that displeased Denether II.
