Smith of Wootton Major

have you read this short tale about the smithson? it's quite short [as in really short] but is nice... it's book is also compiled with tolkein's "farmer giles of ham"

Welcome to the Downs, blackburn! I think this topic may be moved to Novices and Newcomers, but we've all had it done. Enjoy being dead, like us!

Yes, I've read Smith of Wootton Major. One of his best works apart from M-e relating things.

"Smith of Wootton Major" is also discussed on the Autobiographical Tolkien thread - enjoy!

Hello everyone! :)

i have a little question to the lore-masters ;). is it true that in the "extended" edition of "Smith..." Nell's (his wife) hair colour was mentioned?

Estelyn Telcontar 01-05-2007 11:12 PM

I have the extended edition of "Smith", and I can't find any reference at all to Nell's appearance, nor that of any of the other characters.

Extended edition! What extended edition? Let me at it!

Here it is: Smith EE

I'm sure we've discussed this in the past; it was published in 2005. Here's one thread that mentions it: New Tolkien books. It's edited by Verlyn Flieger and has new material, both by Tolkien himself and by her, including photocopies of some of Tolkien's original typed pages. The hardback is not cheap, but all those who have bought it so far (including myself) say it's worth it.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's a 'must-have'. The new material puts a completely different spin on things and if you're thinking of buying Smith for the first time, spend a few pounds more and get the latest edition. :)

B't oi 'aven't gawt pounds t' spend! ;)

Thanks for the link and the encouragement to divest myself of hard earned cash for such a worthy purchase. :)
