Errors of Isildur
 

Hello fellow tolken fans! I thought I would bring your attenion to Isildur. Yea I know he was a great guy and has Aragorn for an heir, but just how wise was he? My main argument is that against council he didn't destroy the ring. It couldn't have ensnared him that fast. He could have rid the free peoples of middle earth of a mortal enemy.
Instead he wanted to "treasure it". In my opinion he had a great name and a dull brain.

I think it was pride that made him keep the ring and not destroy it.

Still not clear on the pride part because it
would not hurt his obviouly large ego to destroy it. Its the typical story if you let your ego keep you from the right thing your decendants have to clean up the mess.

I believe that he wanted to keep it as a "weregild of his father and brother. Check The Council of Elrond. I think it says somewhere in there when Elrond is talking about the Last Alliance.

He was under the spell of the Ring just like the other Ringbearers. Even though Sauron no longer had an earthly form, his spirit was still very much alive and through the Ring would have influenced the Ringbearer in an attempt at self-preservation. Why do you think Frodo was unable to destroy the Ring at the very end? It took an accidental misstep by Gollum to send the Ring into the Crack of Doom.

I agree. Don't be too hard on Isildur. The power of the Ring was so great it was probably beyond any mortal to harm it. Frodo was unable to even throw it into a small fire.
Because it was in Mordor, very close to Mt. Doom, the Ring would have been at nearly the height of its power as well.
