What if...

This is where you discuss "what if's" and the results (funny what if's, but nothing insane) such as, "What if Bilbo gave Frodo a fake Ring because he could not give up his own" or "What if Frodo dropped the Ring along the way" (hey, his chain did break on the Caradras...).

Oh, I have check the search, and there didn't seem to be a what if... except for "What if there was a different ringbearer" which is a different topic altogether.

So, let's start off with...

What if ...Gandalf had truly died in Moria?

(Note: does this topic belong more in the books section? I wasn't sure where it should go)

So, if Gandalf had died in Moria, what do you think might have happened? Well, for one, Saruman wouldn't be defeated, right? So then we have Saruman in the picture...but he would also be trapped by a storm of ents, so would it make a difference?

What do you think?

ElentariGreenleaf 01-25-2003 02:04 PM

I think if Gandalf had off really died, the Ents wouldn't have found out what Saruman was doing. But hte Valar would never let that happen! I can't believe he sailed! Now who's gonna look after middle earth....

Blue Elf 01-25-2003 02:13 PM

That's a good point....I don't think the hobbits would be able to do much, but maybe the rest of the Fellowship could warn the ents...no but it'd be too late. Oh, and I totally forgot about Theoden!! Without Gandalf to give away Grima Wormtongue, Theoden would probably be lending everything to Saruman.

In other words, maybe the Ring would never be destroyed...

And about Gandalf leaving, well, since Sauron is destroyed, the only thing Middle-Earth now needs to worry about is the greed of men. And that's quite a problem...(hey, look at our world...depressing sometimes...)

P.S. Is my avatar showing up? According to my friend, it isn't...

ElentariGreenleaf 01-25-2003 02:26 PM

Good point, and no it isn't.

Blue Elf 01-25-2003 02:36 PM

Oh well......at least I get to see my avatar!!

Maybe we should start a new "What if...".

What if...Bilbo gave Frodo a fake Ring because he couldn't part with the One Ring?

Well, the first immediate effect from that, is that we'd have Smeagol-Gollum and Bilbo-Gollum **shudder**

Meela 01-25-2003 02:39 PM

without gandalf, them lot at helms deep wouldnt have been saved by the rohirrim, aragorn, leg, and gimli wouldnt have gone to edoras, we would have been deprived of grima and never met him, and thered be no such thing as new wardrobes

Blue Elf 01-25-2003 02:42 PM

Helm's Deep might have been saved, but it wouldn't matter since Theoden would still be listening to Grima.

And, yes, we wouldn't have bleach. They should have given Saruman a rainbow dress for the movie...

I can imagine Frodo, about to toss the Ring in, thinking his quest is finished, tossing it, and the mouth of Sauron laughing insanely when nothing happens...

eleanor_niphredil 01-25-2003 03:35 PM

Helms deep wouldnt have had to be saved without Gandalf, as it is Sauruman who attacks.

What if Pippin chickened out at the last minute and refused to go on the quest? what if Elrond had got his way?

*Anuion* 01-25-2003 04:08 PM

Well,

If Elrond got his way then Éowin had died by the hands of the Witch King and where would be no one that was going for the Hobbit's when talking to the Mouth of Sauron.

But on the other hand. Than Gandalf would not have died in the Mine's of Moria.

But then again, Orthanc would not been destroyed by the Ent's either.

Greetings,

Anuion

Plus, Faramir would be dead, as Pippin could not have warned Beregond, who in turn would not have protected him. Then faramir could not have married eowyen, and she would have gone mad in the houses of healing.

Blue Elf 01-25-2003 04:44 PM

Plus, Pippin wouldn't have looked into the Palantir, and Gandalf or soomeone more powerful would have....and then if Sauron saw them, then they would be in trouble...

hobbit punk 01-28-2003 08:48 PM

Here's one: What if Bilbo never found the ring? Would Sauron still have looked for it? Or would it have remained lost forever in Gollum's cave? Do you think Sauron would have found it or maybe have had another one forged? Well then again he was the only one who could've forged a new one...and I don't think a giant eyeball can forge...Well anyway tell me what you think

I think Gollum would be eventually drawn to Sauron, perhaps...
