Acrostics?
I have a weird feeling I may have posted this in the past, but maybe not....
Have you ever written an acrostic? An acrostic is a poem written about a single word/subject, which is written going downwards. That probably didn't make any sense, so here's an example: LOTR Acrostic#1 Steadfast little Hobbit Always by Frodo's side "Mr. Frodo, I'm coming! " The LOTR word is SAM, and the sentences in the poem have to do with him (Duh, like you didn't know I'd write about my fave li'l hobbit.... ) I wrote that one last year, but it's an example. Who else would like to take a stab at it?? |
No living man may hinder he, the Dead Elf told,
Angmar whose iron feet crushed Arnor's bones of old. Zealous howling madness shakes his slaves until they break, Groping Deaths the minds of his foes take. Undying, undead, yet void of all save Death; Life tears from blood when he cries with the Dark One's evil; Shadow that blots out Night. <font size=1 color=339966>[ 7:40 AM December 22, 2003: Message edited by: Olorin_TLA ] |
Wow Olorin, that's excellent. I'm feeling slightly poetic today, so let me take a stab at it:
Bouncing and singing, Over a hill, Master comes Bearing water lilies And rescues Distressed halflings. Into his home they come Laughing, singing, safe. Not horrible... Cute I guess, considering I've been up for about 15 minutes. Fea |
Far away his land is to some
Rescueing the earth was his task to be done Over the mountains and over the hills Driving himself with his last bit of will Overwhelmed he sought peace to his pain, to the west, to the west so the song's sing well that's my little bit hope you enjoy it |
Greedy for "his" ring
Onward he searches Looming, Lying, and cheating Only for his Ring Mad he was, and ever searching Like it? (I bet you can't guess his name. ) |
It's a pity you spelt it wrong.
Silly little hobbit, Met the ring he did, Eager to recieve it, And he killed his friend dead! Gollum was a noise he made, Only in his throat, not said, Little hobbit changed and became evil instead. Ugh, don't like the last line. |
Wow! They all look great to me!
LOTR Acrostic #2 Hardy little people Often seen these days--they're not Because Big People they avoid! I wish I could meet one one day, and Travel to the Shire! |
Thanks, Feanor! You made my year! And I like yours a lot too! (Better than mine, imho!)
I think all of these are great. Green their banners blazed in rippled wind, Red their spears shone, dipped in light, Isen blue turned too its hue, as dimmed thier life, Mighty crests, flowing gold, All foundered from this treachery cold ... Guess who. <font size=1 color=339966>[ 9:50 AM December 24, 2003: Message edited by: Olorin_TLA ] |
I'm honored that you think my poems are good, Olorin, but I like the style of yours better. Mine are... bouncy. My poetry is mostly dark and moody, but it just feels easier to write cheerful acrostics.
Overcome by weariness, Lying by the Withywindle, Drowsy Halflings almost die. Fortunately, Old Tom Bombadil Runs into Frodo and Sam, Enthusiastically Saving The day. Haha- I actually kind of like this one! Fea |
Evil she did not fear
Only stillness was her bane With those she loved she fought Yet the evil king could not see No man could stop him, but a woman was she Blech, the last line came out all wrong, but oh well Prince of the halflings In Gondor proved his strength Purely good at heart Palantir he could not resist Insisted on serving the Steward Naive yet brave at heart Ooh.. I's are hard... lol |
All of you are better than I am--but I just do this for fun.
LOTR Acrostic #3 Bilbo and Frodo A pair of cousins, both Given adventurous spirits (well, maybe not Bilbo so much) Going where other Hobbits did not Into the unknown Now both are in the West Sam followed later. |
Brave and corageous
Oldest son of Denethor Reigning Steward-to-be Only tempted by the Ring Most strongly he fought In Osgiliath he triumphed but Rauros bore him away. You're right, that was hard. |
I really like these. I've got to think up another, but at the moment it's way too early in the morning.....
|
Grim but willing to laugh or smile,
Always remembering the greater good. Never foolhardy were his choices. Doing what he thought was best And guiding the Fellowship safely... Leading them through the Mountains, he Fell in Khadad-dum. |
Running River
Imperishable Wisdom and Virtue of Elrond Never Dying Elven Lord Wow, that one was hard |
Arnor's hope, and Gondor's too, hidden in
Rivendell, fostered there. Always the line descended from the Great kings of Numenor was unbroken. Over many years, the king faded from memory but finally one Returned when the evil was greatest: Telcontir, whose line will Never be broken. |
Very nice, everyone! I've got to rattle this old Hobbit brain and think up some more...
|
Time to try another one... if it doesn't make sense, feel free to berate me incessantly, just remember that I'm ill and dreading my forced doctor's visit in the morning...
Playful young hobbit Interested in everything; Perhaps he should never have Purloined veggies in the Movies. In any case, he ended up meeting Nice people and jerks alike. Taken by Orcs near Rauros, Our half-sized friend was carried Over the fields of Rohan, to Fangorn. Kept safe he was by an Ent. |
And another:
Tall and unhasty, Remeniscent of a tree. Eldest in Middle Earth, he is a powerful Being who roams Fangorn. Elven Princling And Dwarven companion Request permission from him, Daring to explore his land. |
Riders of Rohan!
On your brow is exhaustion. Hear now my words of Intelligence: Give up Resisting Saruman. Ride no more to kill orcs. Instead, submit to The Many Colored and Mark the words of Grima. Did that make any sense? It's meant to be Wormtongue's influence over Theoden, and thus the Rohirrim... Fea |
It did, kind of, though I like "TREEBEARD" the best.
|
My turn, I think.
Barahir's son, for whom Eilinel's love betrayed, Royal outlaw in bliss's swoon Entered into Doriath Nightingale's Doom. |
Hum....let me try this again.

O man, I've been working on this one for about three days now. I think someone's done Merry, but not in prose.
Most abused of the Halflings and Eowyn's friend, this Rohirrim warrior Imbibed to the end; he Always was brave and Did every right thing; he Only despair'd he Could not save the king. He Became a great hero, in Rohan and Shire; he Answered Pip's questions [of which he Ne'er tired]; he Dreaded the wars and Yet Beat down Unrest; thus the Courage of Merry Kept strength in the Quest. Whew.:o |
Old but green,
Stiff but moving. Sap fills their veins, and their strides are long. Centuries pass like fallen leaves, Childless, their broad days are over. |
Um, Liri, what's the acronym there?
Okay, here's mine: Happy to stay in their Own safe world, But occasionally showing great Bravery In times of Trepidation and Sorrow Abedithon le, ~*~Aranel~*~ |
Well my goodness! I thought it was obvious! :( Ents! Ents!! ;)
|
Um, I thought each line had to start with the letter in the character's name?
Here, like this. Eldest of all Middle-earth creatures Not ever hasty Treebeard and Quickbeam are Some of their names. Off the top of my head, and pathetic, I know, but that's the idea. Oh, and Beanamir, soooooo wonderful. |
The Barrow-Downs
It used to be my sig once, and currently is placed somewhere on the main site, I believe, Yet since the handy thread came up, I do not mind repeating it here:
Beware of the wights if your path leads that way Anger lurks here where is no trace of day Roaming souls of the vagabond world Raging in Darkness under skies ever cold Over the valley and under the hill Wraiths walk abroad, host of fear and thrill Deadly their eyes, greenish burning within Oath to keep, cracking bones and no skin Woven are spells of the powerful word Never to fail, be unbroken their sword… So, beware of the wights on the Barrow-Downs way! edit: um, whatever happened to color tags? |
Nobody's done this one yet, I think. I had trouble with the rhythm but I think it's alright now.
Strange little land of peace and tranquility Home to the Hobbit-folk. Inventors of golf and of smoking. Rigours of life don't effect them Everybody happy with their lot. Re-reading it, its not quite right, but the form doesn't require perfect rhythm or metre does it? |

Did 'he' lie
Eagerly? Riding with a Negligible Hobbit. Eowyn 'he' was, Longing for battle she showed her Mettle. Good description, pity I'm really bad at poetry. |
Here's my latest:
Morbid, with the Odor of sulfur Rigid, impenetrable Drowing the cries Of its prisioners Right until their death Hmm...I'm not sure if I like that one or not. |
Well, here's one just for the heck of it.
In Mordor, he did battle Severed from the hand of darkness Into Orodruin he took it Lust for power undid him Doom followed the King Upon Gladden Fields, it came, Rest now in death, Isildur That's all for now. |
G reat big wizard
A lways preaching N ever silly D enethor whacker A lways saying things L ike F ool of a Took D was hard. D was really bad. |
Ever wanting to conquer
On the battlefield; Weary of rebukes, Yearning for glory, Nazgul King she kills. My try at an Eowyn acrostic. Now I'll try to do the Fellowship. Far from home the nine companions travel Ever moving onwards to their destination - Laboring to protect the hobbit whose closest friend Longed to return home. Over the hills and under the mountain... Wanting to reclaim his ring Smeagol followed the fellowship High and low, Into the very crack of Mount Doom, Punching Frodo and biting off the ring he fell. Oh help. That was pathetic, and had more to do with Gollum than anybody else.... ~ Elentari II |
Barrow-Downs
I seem to be stuck on BD in my acrostics :) The following piece was a part of BD Birthday celebration wish, but now it seems to be proper to post it here:
Be ye cheerful, be ye mirthful Ale be flowing, sing ye gleeful Rare be anger, beef be roasting Real be made yer table boasting Oft be singing, rare be weeping Wood be burning, bones be heaping Dark be fearless, stars be shining Oft together ye'll be dining Wights be feasting, minstrels derry Night be dancing, morn be merry Sing ye joyful, sing together! |
Excellent work Heren (and everyone else, of course). I'd completely forgotten about this thread...
From flowering vales he rode Onward to Minas Tirith Realizing not he'd n'er return. Long shall he be remembered, Old and brave as he was. Never giving up, he fought 'til death, before the Gates of the City of Stone. Not my best work, but it's attempt Number 3 and I kind of like it. Fea |
Attack of the rabid Leggy-bopper
Not that great, but it's something...
Lady, do not come near me Ere you do, I'll shoot! Go away! I don't want a concubine! Oh, if only Orlando Bloom were here to take her away from me... Leave me alone, I said! Aaah! Look behind you! Orcs! Silly fangirl... fare thee well! |
Oh, Ithaeliel, that was great!
Okay, I want to try this. Don't kill me for this one, even though my acrostic doesn't REALLY cover an actual LOTR character. Forever silent In the Last Homely House. Going nowhere, saying nothing. Who am I? I cannot say. There is nothing I can say. Yes, it's stupid and the last line was corny. But Figwit is my hero. :D I like being different, and nobody has talked about poor Figgy yet. Maybe when I have another minute I'll write another one. M y A vatar is E lrond wearing G lasses (How's that for a signature?) <--- this is my 100th post!! Wheee! |
