Good guy Orcs!?
I've read several people saying Master Tolkien was big on free choice, so what would it be like if an orc or something like had chosen to do good?
Does anyone have any ideas? [ April 25, 2003: Message edited by: Dûrlossiel ] |
Well then (if this is even possible) we would have an orc running around on the good side, with elves keeping a reasonable distance away, wrinkling their little noses, and his orc buddies from wherever he came from would make fun of him everytime there is a battle. That's my take on it.
O yeah, welcome Durlossiel, post wisely. [ April 25, 2003: Message edited by: Tinuviel the Nightingale ] |
I'd say he'd be kinda inadvertently good. This is an interesting thought, because I'm writing a story right now with a "good" orc in it, and trying to figure out his character has proven very interesting. I suppose an orc could be good, but only under unusual circumstances. Like in my story. But, yeah, I guess it could happen.
BTW, welcome to the Downs, Dûrlossiel! Mae govannen!!! |
Welcome to our obsession Durlossiel! Post wisely(it comes in handy)! OK, I think that a half-orc could be good, but a full orc probably couldn't. Just my opinion.....

Arafangwen has a point, but i must say
HAS NOBODY HERE EVER PLAYED ANY FORM OF A FANTASY GAME????? orcs do have the capacity to be good, in fact, many of them settle down and live normal, happy lives. In ROTK, the orcs that sam and frodo are ofrced to march with are being sent to war against their will, they DON'T want to go to war, but their enslavement by sauron has forced them to, the Uruk-Hai are a totally different matter, they were made by sauron to do his bidding. so not all orcs are evil. they simply have a seriously tribal system of sorting things out, such as ritual scarring and usch, just like we do tatoos. think of them as native americans, but more violent. |
Very well stated, Axe!

I wonder what Tolkien would have thought if he saw half of the topics on the Barrow Downs . As for this one, they porbably have a little bit of good in them somewhere. Remember they were Elves once.

They were tortured to become evil. I think that an orc could not be vil, and simply be passive, but I don't believe that he (she? ) could actually be good. No books with me now, so I can't argue too well, but I'll find them later, maybe.
