Nominations: Best Thread Names

Vote here for the best thread names on the Downs. I look for brevity (which eliminates all my threads), clarity, and well, wit.

To get the ball rolling I nominate:

He Ain't Heavy. He's a Hobbit.
By Birdland.

LOL. Take a bow, Birdie.

-Maril

Bęthberry 10-13-2002 02:00 PM

*rolling the ball along farther*

Middle Earth Airforce, by Thenamir

Sharkü or ręd?, by Mr Underhill

I would also like to suggest an honourable mention for Birdie, for a PM title to me during discussion of how to pronounce "Elessar." Her title was this: Pel-enn-or Fields Forever.

What is ICE - Eurelen
Sneakin around - dogtrot
Oliphaunt preferences -- self-explanatory - onewhitetree
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay off topic -Schvenn Of The Schack
Too Weird - Joy
eyebrows -Mhoram

O.K. that is enouph for now.

Who will take the ball now?

Ithaeliel 10-13-2002 05:17 PM

I nominate the many, many names of the Blue Sky, Night Thunder RPG by Susan Delgado.

I also nominate AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! by me

Birdland 10-13-2002 05:52 PM

(Birdie takes a bow.) Thanks Marileangorifurnimaluim. I've been looking for interesting thread names, but unfortunately (or fortunately) this lead to me reading some very old threads.

Let me get back to you on this...

Susan Delgado 10-13-2002 06:35 PM

Wow! Thanks, Ithaeliel!

Nevfeniel 10-13-2002 06:38 PM

I vote for In praise of Sam's Pans by Nar.

Belin 10-13-2002 06:56 PM

Ithaeliel, does that include "Fool's Errand"?

At the moment, and without research, the one that immediately leaps to my mind is littlemanpoet's "The Light in Gollum's Eyes (with apologies to Child of the 7th Age)".

--Belin Ibaimendi

Nevfeniel 10-13-2002 08:12 PM

Ooh! Ooh! I just found this one by chance, so I nominate Super-Hobbit? Aragorn the Sword-Wielder? Legolas aka "The Flash"? by Samwise.

NazgulNumberTen 10-13-2002 08:46 PM

any of the great threads made by my humble self.

Ithaeliel 10-13-2002 09:00 PM

Yes, Belin, that would include Fool's Errand.

Neferchoirwen 10-13-2002 09:20 PM

Tom Bombadil in the White House by BW.

Quote:

Pel-enn-or Fields Forever
That was CUTE!

Marileangorifurnimaluim 10-13-2002 10:53 PM

In Praise of Sam's Pans. That's a good one!

Tom Bombadil in the White House is definately a classic.

Pel-en-nor Fields Forever should be made into a thread so we can nominate it.

It is rather uncouth to nominate ones own threads. However, a bribe to the judges is always acceptable. I wear a size 4, and prefer emeralds and sapphires over diamonds. Gold settings, not silver or white gold, please, thank you. Do be aware of the punctuation efficiency requirement, may need a little extra to smooth the way?

Amanaduial the archer 10-14-2002 08:31 AM

Well, i nominate either Dreams Of Truth, Six Degrees of Seperation or Coffe. (mmmmmmmmmmmm...)

or of course, just a cry from the rebellious student, The Barrow-Wrights

for the love of god, learn how to spell it. Wight! WIGHT! WIGHT!!!

Estelyn Telcontar 10-14-2002 08:47 AM

This thread title by Eol instantly intrigued me: You too can play underpowered characters! It turned out to be interesting reading too! It's on the Freestyle RPG forum; would all of you please say where those great titles can be located? I'm familiar with most of them, but where do I find Birdie's He Ain't Heavy. He's a Hobbit.?

The Squatter of Amon Rűdh 10-14-2002 09:36 AM

For sheer attention-grabbing surrealism there's Monkeys eat bananas, right? from Elenglin.

DarkRose 10-14-2002 11:30 AM

Hehe, great idea! Here are my nominations:

Treebeard to play with.. By: Tigerlily Gamgee

PRECIOUSSSS SCENES CUT FROM FOTR! By: LembasMuncher

and

Villians R Us- by flyingtable83

Birdland 10-14-2002 12:17 PM

Here's some good ones, after only scanning two pages. In no particular order:

What’s with Feanor’s Kids? - The Phantom

Hey, I’m finally hooked on Silm! - Child of the 7th Age

Do you think that Witch-King is full of himself? - Nick the Orc

Frodo and his issues - Anorien

Not only did these tickle your funny bone, but they make you want to open the thread. A good argument for giving your thread title as much thought as the thread itself

BTW Estelyn - He ain't heavy. He's a Hobbit is in the Movie section, you book snob, you.

VanimaEdhel 10-14-2002 04:03 PM

I would like to nominate (sp?): The Phantom Menace as the most misleading title. Even though it has the "(sp?)", I honestly thought it would have something to do with Star-Wars. Although: what it turned out to be is a lot more amusing! If you have not done so already, check it out!

Marileangorifurnimaluim 10-17-2002 09:59 PM

New nomination!

A Day in the Life of an Elf
Diamond18

*clapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclap..*

-Maril

Susan Delgado 10-17-2002 11:37 PM

I'd like to nominate "A Rough Draught Of A Topic" for its wonderful punniness *applause*

I protest!

This nomination must be disallowed. Rimbaud made up the topic solely and only to finagle a nomination. He must try harder than that.

Yes, I know he did, but I like it anyway.

Belin 10-18-2002 01:27 PM

I'll second that, Susan, even though I was only going to mention those that hadn't yet been mentioned.

More nominations from me (tending toward age, since many of the exceptional current ones have been nominated already):
"Derry dol, indeed" by burrahobbit (The Books)
"Written in Golden Ink... but Who Read It?" by Kalimac (Novices and Newcomers)
"Beren, Luthien, and Big-Mac" by HerenIstarion (The Books)
..and others that I've yet to remember.

Yes, Belin, that would include Fool's Errand.
Odds fame and accolades, that's mine! Thank you, Ithaliel!

Bęthberry 10-18-2002 01:57 PM

Tut, Ladies. You let him off too easily. He will slacken, and then where will be the fun?

Marileangorifurnimaluim 10-18-2002 05:22 PM

Bethberry's protest was lodged with the Academy of Thread Names.

"We take these concerns very seriously," said a member of the Academy, who declined to be identified. She confirmed that 'Draught' has been temporarily suspended from the nominations during the investigation. (Associated Press)

The scandal has threatened to throw the nominations into disrepute. "These contests are all rigged," complained one fan, " 'A Rough Draught of a Topic' is clearly one of the best topics on the Downs. Who cares why he started it? But it's all about who you know in this industry. The Brits never get a fair shake."

On Friday morning, members of MAP gathered outside the Academy to protest the thread's use of gratuitous puns. "It's ammoral! I don't want my children exposed to such language," said Helen Eucre as she faced into the camera, "We're praying for you, Mr. Rimbaud."

The President of the Academy of Thread Names is expected to hold a press conference this evening at 7pm, PDT.

Maybe my 'nomination' is not one of the best, but I find "Skater Elf" by Helkasir good.

Amanaduial the archer 11-03-2002 02:59 PM

The Chicken by dwarin Thunderhammer

Nevfeniel 11-03-2002 07:14 PM

I nominate "Hey, let's kill Shelob!" It quickly grabs the attention of readers.

Marileangorifurnimaluim 11-03-2002 07:56 PM

Ha! Who created 'Let's Kill Shelob'?

-Maril

Susan Delgado 11-04-2002 01:09 AM

Ahh, Nev, you beat me

Eomer of the Rohirrim is that clever gent.

VanimaEdhel 11-07-2002 06:11 PM

May I nominate one of my own? I made one in the Language forum called, My Two Mellons and Other Such Problems...

I made that title just so someone would read it and, hopefully, answer. Well, they did!

Galadrie1 11-08-2002 03:59 PM

Vanima, I was considering nominating that one myself. I read the title and just couldn't help but laugh. Congratulations on a great thread title!

Marileangorifurnimaluim 11-08-2002 04:37 PM

It takes a bribe to the judges to nominate ones own thread. My jewelry box looks a little mournfully empty. There is this ring I'd like, just the smallest trifle I fancy...

Oh. Well Galadrie1's nomination is acceptable by the rules. (Curses.)

-Maril

dragongirlG 11-08-2002 09:16 PM

Far from the Orc I love by Kalimac.

Weepy Bits by muffin_goddess.

Got Gollum? by Mornie Alantie.

Overweight Elves? by Thinhyadoiel.

Did the Necromancer practice necromancy? by Nuranar. (That was a good question, actually.)
