The Two Towers Missing Story Contest

The Barrow-Downs
"The Two Towers"
Missing Story Contest
(6 September 2002 – 31 October 2002)

Write a short story that is missing from "The Two Towers".

Ever really wanted to know what Háma said to Wormtongue when he found Théoden’s sword in his possession? Like to know more about the Dead Marshes? Perhaps another telling of Merry and Pippin in Isengard’s ruins would be nice. Well, here’s your chance to tell the tale!

SUBMISSION RULES
All Stories must … be within the timeframe of TTT.
… fit plausibly into the overall story of the LotR.
… be 500 words or less.
… be submitted by 31 October, 2002.

Stories must not… … contain sexual or drug references
… contain vulgarity.

We’re looking for short stories, so you won’t have to come up with a huge plot line, and your background materiel is already written for you. Just pick a topic you feel would be interesting and start writing. You can send as many as you like. Don't be shy! Anyone can write 500 words or less. Give it a try!!

Awesome, BW. This is the best idea for a contest yet! I can't wait to find out what comes of it. Who knows -- I might even participate.

Regardless, it will be fun to see what the HoME-studying über-posters come up with, as opposed to the people who keep the RPGs going strong, and everyone in between.

Ithaeliel 09-07-2002 02:45 PM

Woooooow....

I want the second first prize...
I think I'm going to consider this.... although I have probably little chance of winning, as I'm not a very talented writer being at a young age. Great idea for a contest.

Thank you!!!

Alkanoonion 09-08-2002 08:02 AM

Great idea Mr B, My stories are on the way.
Hope my T-shirt and mug are ready

Artilien 09-08-2002 11:18 AM

No no no! The T-shirt is mine!! ;P Just kidding. I sent one story already, but i don't think i have any chances. well, it's worth to try

Reserve a spot on your desk for mine Mr. B! You might as well also address the box of goodies to me, too, while you at it

Can you submit more than one story?

Hail, dwarf-friend. Yes, BW said more than one story can be submitted.

BW, this is a great idea!

Eärendil 09-10-2002 01:24 AM

I would love to write and send some stories in, but as I don´t have the trilogy in English (and I should have, as otherwise I will probably write in the "wrong style"), and don´t have a chance to get them until maybe a few days before the contest ends, then...oh well. Maybe next time, if there will be one more like this.
It´s still a great idea for a contest though.

Cimmerian 09-11-2002 05:55 AM

I don't think is possible to write a short story in less than 500 words. It could only be an elegy at best.
Maybe I will give it a shot, just maybe.

Artilien 09-11-2002 09:51 AM

Cimmerian, it is possible I mean i wrote it and it has about 300 words (i think)

DarkRose 09-11-2002 07:38 PM

Wow! This sounds like grand fun. Thanks BW, for the contest.
I think I'll give it a go.

Alkanoonion 10-09-2002 09:26 PM

Have we all started our story for the contest?

I did. It took ten minutes after reading the announcement. Now I doubt if I was too hasty . Or, to get right on it, can a participant submit more than one story?

Eärendil 10-10-2002 01:47 AM

"You can send as many as you like". Yep.

HerenIstarion 10-10-2002 02:10 AM

thanks

Two weeks, three days 'til the contest deadline! Hey, B-W, I know you can't say who's entered, but can you say how many entries you have gotten so far?

Well, there goes my Quentin Tarantino-esque Merry/Pippin slash fiction. You just make this tough, don't you BW?

*holding sides and howling*
Maril, Maril, you missed your calling; you should have been the court jester...

ilon 10-14-2002 05:57 AM

Nice contest. I may try but I'm sure it would be of little quality compared to the people joining Down's RPGs. I'm conceding, i'll try to make but i won't pass it anyway, i'll make one lousy tale.

Marileangorifurnimaluim 10-18-2002 09:18 PM

*Grin* Thanks, Helen!

B-W, I find I am incapable of writing a story 500 words or less. (Big surprise there.) Am I disqualified?

-Maril

arelendil 10-26-2002 12:09 PM

i can't write anything ecery time i write anything i always come up with why didn't they/he/she/it tell everyone else it doesn't work! i'm i over thinking, i just want it perfect i even made a calendar and road map!

The Barrow-Wight 10-26-2002 02:10 PM

I hope you included some capitalization and punctuation, too! Send that story soon, because the contest ends next week.

arelendil 10-26-2002 02:27 PM

No i never finished it! I had ideas but they wouldn't hold up to myself. I like being inside the characters' head and when you ask simple questions like "Why didn't i tell Aragorn that i got attacked?" - Eowyn, the story really isn't worth much! Maybe i like the thing too much, i can write things after the end of LOTRs but in the middle... If its not there it isn't there for a reason! If you ever have a "Write the next chapter" competition than i would happily join in! If I'm being to hard let me know and i'll send it but at the moment it's another LOTRs story under my bed, in my world where no one can laugh at it! Maybe it should stay there!!

Alkanoonion 10-30-2002 08:50 PM

One day left!

Must hurry and finish my story.

Elenna 10-31-2002 08:33 AM

ERG! I'm still 536 words! NOOOOO!

Elenna 11-01-2002 07:17 AM

No! I couldn't get on the computer at all last night after I finished my tale. I just sent it in. PLEASE let it in!

The Barrow-Wight 11-01-2002 07:33 AM

Let this be a lesson of the perils of procrastination!

If it got into my e-mail box before I woke up this morning, I'll probably put it in the contest. Otherwise, you're too late.

Elenna 11-01-2002 08:23 AM

Well, were you up post-7:11? That's when I sent it.

And I am duly chastened for procrastination. *Elenna cowers meekly before His Wightiness*

Marileangorifurnimaluim 11-05-2002 12:56 AM

So... who won? I never did get anything less than 1,000 words. What can I say? The name Marileangorifurnimaluim says it all.

Alkanoonion 11-05-2002 01:32 AM

I missed the deadline but all is not lost, I can send it in once it is finished as a “Fan Fiction”

Eärendil 11-05-2002 03:16 AM

Mlo 11-05-2002 10:06 AM

Oh Doh! I missed sending mine in! Ah well, it still wouldn't have won, so whatever. Anyway, congrats kate, Evenstar1 and Elisabeth!
Hmm... Wonder where I can read them... god I'm always so confused

Birdland 11-05-2002 11:30 AM
