What's up?

Ron, what's wrong with the site? I can't open it :(

The Barrow-Wight 12-31-2000 08:01 AM

Y2K!!!! It's here!!!

Actually, server crashed... fixed soon (I hope).

HerenIstarion 12-31-2000 08:10 AM

Yes, I see, it says:

The Barrow-Wight 12-31-2000 08:29 AM

Indeed it does. But it lies! The server is not working correctly and it has nothing to do with traffic. It's Y2K - II!

So that's why i couldn't connect, and i thought it was my faulty modem. Boy I can't wait until I have a T1 again, stupid 56k.

HerenIstarion 01-02-2001 04:48 AM

You call 56k stupid :D? Maximum I can expect is 33.6 (usually goes for 31.2). No problem with the modem - the phone line is as old as my granny.

Hey Ron! When's the site coming up again? BTW, why don't you respond to Underhill's Olog Hai article?

The site is back up (for now!)... and Mr. Underhill's article was (partly) in reply to my original article. I don't want to reduce two good article to just preludes to an argument. We already argued about it in here :)

I have the EZboard bookmarked so I can come in that way, too, when the site is down... but when people refer to "the site" or "the Downs" here, Valkemen, they mean www.barrowdowns.com, the home of this forum.

I assume this is effecting the encyclopedia also?
I always come in through ezboard [which means i don't vote enough , but I am trying ].

Lindil is often found on posting on the New Silmarillion Canon Forum at the Barrowdowns discussion board. 'The dwindling Men of the West would often sit up late into the night, and awaken early before dawn- exchanging lore and wisdom such as they possessed , so that they should not fall back into the mean and low estate of those , who never knew or more sadly still, had indeed rebelled against the Light.'

I don't think I have ever voted for this site, maybe once or twice, but that would be all. I have the ezboard bookmarked and always come through there.

Nor have I ever voted for it. In fact, I can't recall a place to do so. I've visited the 25 Hobbits site, but have never seen a place for voting.

My entry is also by bookmark.

And if Durelen is to be shamed, then I shall join her in receiving the general admonishment (misery loves company).

How to Vote

In order to place your daily vote for the Downs, which is your favorite website, go to the Downs home page http://www.barrowdowns.comwww.barrowdowns.com, then look for the Vote button on the left side of the screen, near the top. Once you click that button, a new window will pop up for the 25 Hobbits website. For your vote to count, you must then click ENTER. Voila! You have voted for the Downs!

25 Hobbits will accept a vote for any site once per day. So make it a daily habit!

There is not even trouble of looking to the left upper corner left any more - appeal to vote pops up in the first place as soon as site opens completely

Re: How to Vote

I assure you it does not appear as soon as the site loads.

When bookmarked, no such thing happens.

However I will check out Red's instructions to see the results.

I am plagued with an unreliable server and bad technical support. If only I could find a good NT host with admins who know what they are doing!

Re: How to Vote

I see the vote worked now.

Since I prefer to not go through several pages first just to get here; I'll retain the bookmark approach (I should note that the bookmark is to the discussion forums and not the main page, of which I SELDOM [read as: I think thrice maybe] visit; my bad I suppose).

HerenIstarion 11-09-2002 02:14 AM

Well, the question posed in the first post of the thread. I was not able to get to the main site (HTTP 500, server error), not only today, but yesterday too. Is it just me? I mean, if it's just me, I have to contact my proxy server admin, feat I would avoid if I could ;)

Inziladun 11-09-2002 03:44 AM

After a long absence I found the same problem, so it isn't just you HI. It's been so long since my last visit I wondered if the site had sailed into the West....then I just tried going directly to the forum.

HerenIstarion 11-09-2002 04:43 AM

Hi, Inziladun, nice to see you. Where have you beed for so long?

Maikadilwen 11-09-2002 06:01 AM

It's definitely not just you, H-I. I could, however, access the main page and follow most links from that, but the Forum was down. *sniffle*
It's such a cruel world...

TolkienGurl 11-09-2002 11:02 AM

I couldn't get in here either! I thought it was just my computer messing up. I guess not.

Maikadilwen 11-09-2002 11:11 AM

Heh! I knew it wasn't my puter or my connection messing up, since Yahoo was working perfectly. And if Yahoo is working.....

Yesterday I couldn't get onto the forum until trying again late afternoon. Then I tried to get on last night and I couldn't even get onto the main page!
I'm glad it's not just me who was having problems.

Elenna 11-09-2002 12:38 PM

Well, I managed to get over the trauma of not being able to use the Internet yesterday. Maybe it was an overflow on the web - didn't that happen a couple of weeks ago?

And then, once it started working again, this site was down! What are you trying to do? Scare me into therapy?

Alkanoonion 11-09-2002 05:40 PM

I was also unable to enter the Downs, I thought it was because I had changed my home page and it was making my computer nuts. But I found other things to do, I just worked on my new web page called Bree under Bree-hill instead. Glade to see the site is working again.

Amanaduial the archer 11-10-2002 08:27 AM

yeah i mean i was getting desperate- I mean, i tried yahoo! And it worked! While barrowdowns wasnt! Oh for shame, for shame, I feel like such a traitor...

ok, ill shut up now.

Wierd how u occasionally find these really old threads.

HerenIstarion 11-11-2002 12:28 AM

Boast warning, don't read if you don't want to read me bragging about myself ;)

So, I'm going to boast, Aman. It's not weird, I just happen to have very good memory, so I remember many of those oldies by name

HerenIstarion 04-22-2004 01:42 AM

enjoy it :)

Nothing is wrong with my access to the Downs, sure. To be honest, I'm bringing this up as a practical joke. Or, maybe as part of the "know your history" course. For I really enjoyed to reread the conversation where three out of five of our nowadays decorous government talk with what is somewhat less seriousness than is witnessed anywhere on the modern BD ;)

Sirithheruwen 05-23-2004 12:26 PM

*giggles* I like this "Know Your History" course!
*rereads* Was that really Mr. B-W's posts?!?! And he complains about us...*shakes head* ;)

(Just kidding! ;) )
