40,000 Posts!

Not only has the Barrow-Downs exceeded 1500 members, we have also exceeded 40,000 posts! Congratulations BW and thanks to every one of our members!

Inziladun 02-08-2002 05:39 AM

Hear, hear.

Marileangorifurnimaluim 02-08-2002 08:29 PM

Wow! Of which Mithadan I note has over 1,200, and the B-W more than 3,000. I realize I'm giving away my stats-job here, but I wonder what proportion of the total posts are by the long-term 500+ post members, and what by 'shades', 'wights', 'haunting spirits' and so on. The real testimony would be if most of our posts are by the members who stick around, 100+ posts.

Elrian 02-09-2002 01:34 AM

Congratulations on 40,000 posts, now that's alot of talking Tolkien! With 1500+ members, that will change to 50,000 in no time.

Good question Maril. The BW and the DC's have some really high post counts, may their post counts and interesting posts grow ever higher! I wonder how many 500+ posters there are here at the Downs.

Good job to everyone who set up this site. In my opinion, this forum is the best anywhere.

Im sure, though, that all the extra bandwidth being used is like a vacuum in the Barrow Wights pockets. I would donate money, if I had any.

Glenethor 02-09-2002 10:55 PM

Greets,

Are you sure you have 1,500 actual members? I owned a UBB/BBS that had 5,000+ registered members, but there were a few...um....individuals who had multiple usernames. I think one of them had around 75-100. I know I haven't been here that long, so I don't know the personalities, dynamics, and what is and what is not tolerated here.

People would do this when they felt like harrassing someone, or wanted to express an unpopular opinion without discrediting themselves.

Anyways, this is a very cool site, nice layout. I think I'll be around for a while.

Yes, and I really appreciate the extra bandwidth - no more posting problems. BUY B-D T-SHIRTS AND CUPS!

Yeah, bandwidth became an issue on my old site as well. The site was getting 10,000 hits per day, and the Host was at best incompetent, and at worst thieves. The new owner has apparently sprung for a dedicated server, but if their network has problems, the dedicated server will do squat. They have been having problems recently, 'Access Denied' messages, 'Can't find server 'xxxxxxx.com' messages. So, believe me, I know what a hassle it can be to keep a site like this up and running smoothly, and that doesn't even take into account the personality conflicts that can take place.

BTW, I experienced a few 'can't find server barrowdowns.com' messages today.

I don't know what your bandwidth/storage requirements are, but if I could be of service to the Powers-That-Be here, I would be happy to share any wisdom I gleaned from running a fairly large site. Please do not hesitate to send me a private message.

Regards,

Glen(ethor)

The powers that be are working on improving matters. Thanks for the offer, Glen. We may take you up on it. BTW, we moved our boards last September, so there are likely relatively few users with multiple names.

WOW...

Beren87 04-06-2003 09:50 PM

I found this topic incredibly cute, I'd like to bring it to the top and say The Downs is now at 177647 posts!

elven maiden Earwen 04-06-2003 09:53 PM

Gorwingel 04-07-2003 12:25 AM

That is a lot of posts, but I wonder how many are actually worth reading
I can tell you even I have had my share of posts that were worth nothing

Wow...I say we start a "Barrow-Wight Foundation" for when His Almighty Moderator-ness runs out of change to pay for this little site...
EDIT: change that to "not-so-little site". Last February, when I joined (a year and 2 months ago), I swear this site was about half this size...

Congrats, Mr. Barrow-Wight!

Woah....so in a year, there have been more than 100,000 more posts on the Downs?

Man. Congratulations!

GaladrieloftheOlden 04-07-2003 10:27 AM

This is slightly off topic, but

long-term 500+ post members
I currently have abour 480, and I can't say I've been here for long- my first post was Jan 27th! Just a question- when was the Barrowdowns made? Because I had thought that it was only about 2/ 2.5 years old, in which case that would be a lot of posts.

Hirilaelin 04-08-2003 12:22 AM

Congrats to all! And another post added to the total... heh heh!

Regarding long term members: What if you're almost at the 500 mark, but you joined three months ago? Just me, or does this not make sense

Eressië Ailin 04-08-2003 12:25 AM

I joined Feb. 10, and I'm getting closer to 500 posts, but I definately wouldn't consider myself a long-term member. It may feel like I've been here forever, but I certainly have not.

Mithadan 04-08-2003 08:08 AM

The Barrow-Downs website has been around nearly 4 years. The forums opened on May 1, 2000.

Balin999 04-08-2003 08:28 AM

Em... that would be nearly 3 years then, right Mithadan?

Hey look at me, Hirilaelin, I'm a member since the foundation of the forum and I don't even have 500 posts. It doesn't matter how many times you post, as long as you remain a loyal member of the best forum on the whole World Wide Web

Galadrie1 04-08-2003 04:00 PM

Maybe the website and the forum were started at different times, Balin....

Galadrie1 is correct, Balin. But then again, so are you, about this being the best site and all...
