Shire know-it-alls!

Ok all you hobbits who think you know the Shire:
What is the name of the place situated in the south-east corner of the Shire?

Mat_Heathertoes 02-24-2002 09:20 AM

When you say 'place' I am taking it that you are referring to settlements .. in that case Willowbottom and Deephallow are the two most 'South-Easterly' villages and hamlets ..

If you mean Geographically in a wider sense then Overbourne Marshes and Haysend are visible as being named locations on the map printed at the front of the Lord of the Rings. However Sarn Ford which is off the map could also be argued to be the most South-Easterly point of the Shire as that is where the Rangers, known as Bounders in the Shire, tried in vain to hold back the Nazgul at they rode to find the Ring-Bearer..

*is cracking up*
I'd say that's a rather detailed answer, wouldn't you????

Watcher in the Water 03-07-2002 10:48 PM

I would say that it is indeed rather detailed... and I will add that i think this thread needs reviving also...

Watcher in the Water 03-08-2002 12:21 AM

Ok thought of one - What was the name of the area in and around the shire called before becoming inhabbited by hobbits?

Mat_Heathertoes 03-11-2002 09:00 AM

Eriador? Arnor? Arthedain ? The land beyond the Baranduin ?

Watcher in the Water 03-11-2002 08:49 PM

I was thinking Suza...

Have a go anyways - lets keep this show rolling!

Telchar 03-12-2002 02:28 AM

Just to add - Suza was not the former name of The Shire, but the genuine Hobittish name.

Watcher in the Water 03-12-2002 02:46 AM

Yes sorry I realise that after Mat gave his answers... I had the question wrong rather than the answer if you see what i mean!

Apologies

Telchar 03-12-2002 03:15 AM

Don't Apologiese ... hmmmm... But still - you should be punished!!! Punishment is that you ask a new question!!!

Watcher in the Water 03-12-2002 07:58 PM

Fine - I'll ask an easy one then

What is a mathom?

ElanorGamgee 03-12-2002 09:17 PM

I think that "mathom" is the word for something of little or no worth...isn't the museum called the "Mathom House" or something like that?

Watcher in the Water 03-12-2002 11:17 PM

Yeah I'd say that its probably close enough...

Ask on!!!

ElanorGamgee 03-13-2002 12:16 PM

Ok, this one is probably easy...

What is the only weekday that the Shire month never begins on?

ElanorGamgee 03-13-2002 10:02 PM

Right! Your turn...

Sam Gamgee 03-29-2002 12:43 PM

Just to make it clear to myself, a mathom is, "Something that the hobbits had no immediate use for, but were unwilling to throw away." okay, got it, don't mind me
oh, and yes, the museum is called the "Mathom house"
