Natural History Quiz

We need more quiz threads, but this is all I could come up with for now. Let's all study the Natural History (animal, mineral, vegetable) of Middle Earth and points West.

To start:

Name and describe a flower that grows in Rohan.

Telchar 01-14-2002 03:07 AM

Simpelmynde the white starshaped little flower that grew on the graves of the kings - also called 'Everwhite' eller 'Oilos' (from memory - so may be miss spelled) because it grew all year.

Lostgaeriel 01-14-2002 04:36 AM

Close enough, Telchar! Great memory. Your description is exactly right.

I have the names and spellings as Evermind and Simbelmynė from LOTR. And I see from The Silmarillion that those names would translate to Oiolossė - "ever-snow-white".

Your turn!

Telchar 01-14-2002 06:27 AM

+ it was the same flower that grew on Fingolfins grave...

An easy one:
Bregalad, the ent - which tree did he look like and what kind of tree did he have special care for?

Cirdan the Shipwright 01-14-2002 11:19 AM

Was he an elm? (or was that beechbone?)

- Cirdan / Maglor68

Turambar 01-14-2002 12:42 PM

He sang to the rowan trees, is that the answer?

Telchar 01-15-2002 02:38 AM

Hmmm I cant find the discription of him reffering to any tree - as I thought I could But I allways saw him as a birch or a beech - still Turambar gets it for remembering the rowan trees which loss he morned

Turambar 01-15-2002 09:29 AM

Which character(s) in LotR take a rest in a stand of bay trees, and where?

Telchar 01-15-2002 10:28 AM

Frodo and Samvise in Ithilien

Turambar 01-16-2002 07:56 AM

Yep !

Telchar 01-16-2002 08:18 AM

what is the first 'growing' thing that is mentioned in LOTR (not including the foreword and prologue) ?

Maltagaerion 01-16-2002 04:46 PM

I'll take a stab at this and say 'potatoes'

Lostgaeriel 01-16-2002 06:13 PM

Oh Telchar, you devious Dwarf!

It was Bilbo's cousins!

Telchar 01-17-2002 02:45 AM

Maltagaerion gets it because this is a 'Natural History Quiz' which I judge to concern 'the plant-kingdom' and I did have the Gaffers potatoes in mind.

Still Lostgaeriel came up with a very brilliant and creative answer - I like that too

Maltagaerion 01-18-2002 12:04 PM

Sorry for the delay guys, a massive load of overtime work was dumped on me hehe.

I'll give you guys an easy one: What did Sam plant in the Party Field?

Eowyn of Ithilien 01-19-2002 01:30 AM

the seed of a mallorn tree which Galadriel gave him in Lothlorien

Maltagaerion 01-19-2002 01:01 PM

Kudos! your turn Eowyn

Eowyn of Ithilien 01-19-2002 02:47 PM

What's the "favoured" orcish mode of transport? *apologies if that's ambiguous*

The "favoured" orcish mode of transport related to Natural History??? Trampling growing things? Guessing.

Quote:

'No other folk make such a trampling,' said Legolas. 'It seems their delight to slash and beat down growing things that are not even in their way.'

Eowyn of Ithilien 01-20-2002 12:11 AM

alllllright what animal are they known to have ridden on

Marileangorifurnimaluim 01-20-2002 12:24 AM

Wolves!

Marileangorifurnimaluim 01-20-2002 12:24 AM

Wolves! Or more specifically, Wargs.

Eowyn of Ithilien 01-20-2002 12:28 AM

lol yes I hope that counted as natural history; it was all I could think of at the time
