I saw this game at Entmoot (heck with so many members they're bound to come up a good idea now and then - actually, I think I foun the 'quotes' game there, too)

Here goes: Askers types in a line or a quote. Answerer types in the next sentence or passage from the book. Answerer, having verified the answer by typing it in, types in a new starting line.

Heres an example:
&quot;A nice, well-spoken gentlehobbit is Mr. Bilbo as I've always said,&quot; the Gaffer declared.

Looking this up in the book you'd find the next line is:
With perfect truth: for Bilbo was very polit to him, calling him 'Master Hamfast'.... etc.

The trick is to make it so the reference is not so obvious as this example and not so vague as to be impossible to find.

The next message will contain my first one.

&quot;I hope there and not many more hobbits that have become like this. It would be a worse trouble than all the damage the Men have done.&quot;

And my new line...

Gimli and Legolas looked at their companion in amazement, for they had not seen him in this mood before.

He seemed to have grown in stature while Eomer had shrunk; and in his living face they caught a brief vison of the power and majesty of the kings of stone.

Here's the next one (should be easy):

In a chair, at the far side of the room facing the outer door, sat a woman.

I'd like to see this game at least attempted. Look at red's post above and see if you can find the next line in the texts of the books.

Sorry about my previous answer. I did eventually realise that I had put in the preceding line by mistake! The actual answer should have been:

&quot;And where will other men look for help, if Gondor falls?&quot; answered Denethor.

And here is my quote:

&quot;It is doubtful if he ever did anything braver in cold blood, or more unwise.&quot;

...but I admit Sam may have muttered elsewhere.

Hey, get me -- I'm a &quot;Wight&quot;. Thanks, Ron, and thanks for running a great board.

Re: Come on, folk! Let's try this one.

<blockquote>Quote:<hr> At that moment Elrond came out with Gandalf, and he called the company to him.'This is my last word,' he said in a low voice. 'The Ring-bearer is setting out on the quest of Mount Doom. On him alone is any charge laid: neither to cast away the Ring, nor to deliver it to any servant of the Enemy or indeed to let any handle handle it, save members of the company and the Council, and then only in gravest need.'<hr></blockquote>

And here's mine:

<blockquote>Quote:<hr> He took off the Ring, moved it may be by some deep premonition of danger, though to himself he wished only to see more clearly. 'Better have a look at the worst,' he muttered. 'No good blundering about in<hr></blockquote>

Re: Come on, folk! Let's try this one.

&quot;...a fog!'
Hard and cruel and bitter was the land that met his gaze. Before his feet the highest ridge of the Ephel Dúath fell steeply...&quot;

That was Sam upon entering Mordor in order to rescue Frodo from the orcs of Cirith Ungol.

My new one is:
<blockquote>Quote:<hr> &quot;I rode under the arch, and the gate closed silently behind me, and suddenly I was afraid, though I knew no reson for it.&quot;<hr></blockquote>

<h6> Like yapping dogs
Blind lead the blind
Those who chain the future
Are those time leaves behind
Is glory now gone?
A friendship worth of fiends
Is a rose without thorns. </h6></p>
