Uruk-Hai
Are Uruks just the creation of Sarumon or did Sauron have them to? I seem to remember it being mentioned somewhere that a race of larger orcs called Uruks came to Mordor some time before the war. Also, is there any difference in calling them Uruks or Uruk-Hai?

Saruman's Uruk-hai creation is a misconception caused by the movie. He bred orcs and golbin-men, but Sauron had beat him to the sun-resistant orcs. In the Black Speech, "Uruk" simply means orc, but it is almost always used in reference to the Uruk-hai. Certainly so when speaking of these larger orcs.
This is a fairly basic, often-asked question. Moving to N&N. <font size=1 color=339966>[ 4:16 PM January 14, 2004: Message edited by: Legolas ] |
this is oft asked.
i am almost sure that "uruk-hai' simply means 'orc-folk', and as such could refer to any orcs. this is linquistically true, but it might not be in practice... |
Sauron took Osgiliath with "Black Uruk's of Mordor" but then Boromir go it back

Also on the topic of orcs, during the ROTK movie when Frodo has been bitten by Shelob and is being held captive in one of the towers in Mordor a fight breaks out. It seems that the fight has arisen between an Uruk-Hai and an Orc. The Uruk kills the orc (i think) and then there is a large fight on the lower levels between the beasts. Is this fight between Orcs and Uruk-Hai? Or is it simply a all in brawl.

Uruks, I believe, were large trolls. In RotK, the orcs were of different "companies"- some were of Minas Morgul, and some were from Barad-dur. They didn't trust each other, and so they started a civil war over a shirt of mail.

I believe there was a breed of trolls known as the Olag-Hai in the Return of the King but Uruks were definitely orcs.
