Bilbo's age

i just don't get this - its the only thing i don't understand - in the fellowship of the ring, bilbo turns 111, then when the ring has been destroyed and frodo & co get back to rivendell bilbo is 129 or something like that! and when they go past weathertop or it's exactly 1 or 2 years after he got stabbed - he gets a pain. I don't understand. I've probably got totally confuddled and muddled but anyway i was just wondering how long the whole LOTR book(s) took.

In the first chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring, Bilbo is 111 years old and Frodo is 33.

The second chapter opens when Frodo is 49 years old. He leaves Bag End the day after his 50th birthday.

This gap of seventeen years is ignored in the film.

Selmo's right . . .

This is why you should never try to understand a novel based off of a movie- just in general

What????

What that means is that you shouldn't try to base the novel on the movie. Don't look for the movie in the book, but look for the book in the movie! It's much more reliable!
