Your Favorite Battle Cry...

There are a many battle cries and laments in Tolkien's writings. I'm interested, what are your favorites... Elendil, Aiya Earendil Elenion Ancalima, Forth Eorlingas?
Your own would be cool too.

Beren87 03-17-2003 11:03 PM

I love Gimli's at Helm's Deep.

Baruk Khazud! Khazud Ai-menu!

Túrin Turambar 03-18-2003 04:22 AM

'Aure entuluva! Day shall come again!' - Húrin at Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

Dain 03-18-2003 08:54 AM

"Buruk Khazad! Khazad Ai-menu!" is of course, the best.

Not exactly a war-cry, but "You shall not pass!" is excellent as well.

mark12_30 03-18-2003 09:52 AM

"Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode, and to heart's breaking;
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!"

--King Eomer of Rohan

Rynoah, the Overly-Happy 03-18-2003 12:54 PM

"For Gondor!" of course! Also Éomer's cry that mark posted before me.

Lalaith 03-18-2003 02:50 PM

I second Turin, most heartily. "'Aure entuluva" is the most moving, stirring battle cry ever.

eleanor_niphredil 03-18-2003 03:13 PM

Theodens red nightfall speech. Or the rubber ducky chant. Whichever you prefere.

Meela 03-19-2003 11:31 AM

battle cries...

anything gondorian.

and rohirric, i spose...

is this only books? cos in two towers eomer yells "Rohirrim", and that gets me every time

I am one for the battle cries of Rohan.

Arise now, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Dire deeds awake, dark is it eastward.
Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!
Forth Eorlingas!

as well as...

Our King and the White Rider! Forth Eorlingas!

And of course Eomer's cry that was already posted :-D

Lily Bracegirdle 03-19-2003 07:48 PM

Amroth for Gondor! Amroth to Faramir!

Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deeds awake; fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

-Lily

the guy who be short 03-20-2003 07:45 AM

it depends on my mood. usually i use baruk khazad, khazad ai menu. when im feeling taller i use elendil, sometimes i use ecthelion. i also love aure entuluva, but it only really works against creatures of darkness, which i have never met.

Scott 03-29-2003 11:24 PM

This is one I just thought up -

Elva cotumo lantaluva!
Our enemy shall fall!

Couldn't think of a better one. My eyes were glued to the pages of my book during that part.

Elotareth 03-30-2003 11:32 AM

No kidding Meela! I love it when Eomer shouts "Rohirrim"! "Forth Eorlingas" is pretty cool too, but I think those tears in my eyes during that part are from the music.

i start crying the moment the Rohirrim are riding down the slope, and you cant hear anything but the music over the top. I think its generally the music that contributes to the moment. I find that i cry more only when listening to the soundtrack.

Diamond18 03-30-2003 10:14 PM

My favorite war cry?

Quote:

Let's go fix their little red wagons!
Uh...what, you wanted something from Tolkien? *grumbles*

Seriously, actually. I love all the one's already mentioned, but my most favoritest is definitely:

Quote:

We come, we come with roll of drum: ta-runda runda runda run!

We come, we come with horn and drum; ta-runa runa runa rom!

To Isengard! Though Isengard be ringed and barred with doors of stone;
Though Isengard be strong and hard, as cold as stone and bare as bone,
We go, we go, we go to war, to hew the stone and break the door;
For bole and bough are burning now, the furnace roars — we go to war!
To land of gloom with tramp of doom, with rool of drum, we come, we come;
To Isengard with doom we come!
With doom we come, with doom we come!

Afrodal Fenyar 03-31-2003 03:52 AM

Quote:

Aurë entuliva! The day shall come again!
This has to be the best. There's no greater glory than fighting to the bitter end(even though Húrin did not die. Well, his fate was even more terrible than death..) And of course, the quote is great, too

the guy who be short 04-02-2003 02:08 PM

does anybody please know how to say

dagger of the dwarf, the dwarf is upon you in khuzdul?

if not, how about sword instead of dagger? or even just the dwarf is upon you? plzzzzz

Balin999 04-06-2003 03:24 PM

i think that would be "khazad ai-menu"
but i think that's the dwarfs are among you or sth like that.

My favourite war cry: "Charge" by any unknown and forgotten captain at the battle of the Pelennor-Fields.

Oddwen 05-06-2003 01:38 PM

"Baruk Khazad! Khazad ai menu!" means "The axes of the dwarves! The axes of the dwarves are upon you!"

That's cool, but my favorite is "Death, death," upon the Pellenor fields, after Eomer sees Eowyn. That gives me chills.
My personal battle cry would be "Agh! Help!"

One Axe to Rule them All 05-06-2003 01:44 PM

My favorite battle cry is already in my sig, so there's no need to repeat it.

but i think the one i'd be most likely to say would be "The Battle is at hand"
i'm sure all of you Icewind Dale fans recognize that one.

Another one I really really like is-
Quote:

Arise now, arise, Riders of Théoden!

Dire deeds awake, dark is it eastward.
Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!
Forth Eorlingas!
that almost always brings a lump to my throat.

Mitheithel 05-07-2003 07:04 AM

I like Gimli`s too (Baruk khazad! Khazad ai-menu!)

Rindoien, elf of Lothlorien 05-09-2003 12:37 PM

I just like yelling 'A Elbereth, Gilthoniel!'

Yavanna228 05-09-2003 07:11 PM

I don't know if this counts as a battle-cry, but I love the spirit it shows. This one is from Sam when he is in the Tower of Cirith Ungol.
Quote:

'Yes! The Elf-warrior is loose!' he cried. 'I'm coming. Just you show me the way up, or I'll skin you!'
I love Sam's great heart shown in that, and his good humour!
Peace

GaladrieloftheOlden 05-09-2003 11:36 PM

"Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode, and to heart's breaking;
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!" is definitely my favorite. I don't know why, but I guess it seems sad and hopeful and 'fell' at the same time.

Tinuviel the Nightingale 05-10-2003 02:51 AM

Well if I really came upon a deadly foe I think I would just scream, "AAAAAAA!" and run the opposite way, but if I actually was a noble warrior, I would yell an elven cry before bravely plunging into battle.

GaladrieloftheOlden 05-10-2003 04:32 AM

Quote:

I would run towards the foe, but still screaming "AAAAAAAAA!" Or maybe something more along the lines of "!@#$ AAAAA *&^%" but that's besides the point.

I second that. It is always good to swear at a foe, it will get him mad. And madness is a bad advisor in battle.

Gimli's Baruk Khazud! Khazud Ai-menu!is cool. But I forgot what it meant. Part of it means the dwarves have come I believe. Someone explain please.

The best cry is always from The Tick: SPOON!!!

And a good JIHAAAA is always good.

DayVampyre 05-10-2003 04:23 PM

I can't help but wonder if anyone's country's army has a real cry other than

"AAAAAAARRRRRRRRR"

or something of the sort....

And still not Tolkien but moving is the Rebel's Yell from the Civil War.

Scott 05-10-2003 06:37 PM

Helkahothion,
The translation for the battle cry of the dwarves you seek is:
The axes of the dwarves! The axes of the dwarves are upon you.!
(Baruk Khazad! Khazad ai menu!).

Suilad,
Scott

Helkahothion 05-10-2003 06:42 PM

Thanks man.

Luthien_ Tinuviel 05-10-2003 08:43 PM

My favorites have already been posted, but I'll repeat them:

Quote:

Forth Eorlingas!
Quote:

Aure entuluva!
Quote:

Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode, and to heart's breaking;
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!
Quote:

Elendil!
(I use that one a lot).

Quote:

Arise now, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Dire deeds awake, dark is it eastward.
Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!
Forth Eorlingas!

Quote:

Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deeds awake; fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

Quote:

Death, death!
Quote:

A Elbereth, Gilthoniel!
Quote:

'Yes! The Elf-warrior is loose!' he cried. 'I'm coming. Just you show me the way up, or I'll skin you!'
Quote:

Out of doubt, out of dark, to the day's rising
he rode in the sun, sword unsheating.
Hope he rekindled, and in hope ended;
over death, over dread, over doom lifted
out of loss, out of life, unto long glory.
Not a battle cry, but really good all the same.

Quote:

Ride now! Ride now! Ride to Gondor!
Quote:

Theoden King! Theoden King!...Mourn not overmuch! Mighty was the fallen,
meet was his ending. When his mound i raised,
women then shall weep. War now calls us!
Wow! That was a long list! As you can see, every Tolkien battle cry is my favorite. But some good non-Tolkien ones include The Song That Never Ends, evil laughter, "The metallic blue rats are upon you!", "Stand and fight!" (in a duel), and something along the lines of "Kill them!"

Helkahothion 05-11-2003 04:25 AM

do the elves have battle cries or are they their own cool selves in battle? That's what Dwarves do better than elves. They let go in battle. Elves never smile.

Aule 05-11-2003 10:11 AM

Buruk Khazad! Khazad Ai-menu!
&
ELENDIL!!!!!
both very cool
There are a few in the Silm that are cool, but haven't got it to hand so i can't quote them

Scott 05-11-2003 09:20 PM

Again in response to Helkahothion,
I think Elves can go a bit crazy in battle. Just look at Hurin. Running around killing (what, seventy?) trolls screaming "Day shall come again" doesn't really seem too calm and collected to me.
Then again, in the movies the elves do seem pretty under control during the battle scenes. Tangado haid. Hado i philinn. (Hold your positions. Fire the arrows) Doesn't really seem to strike too much fear into my heart.

Hurin was a man not an elf, although I think elves can go crazy in battle, just look at Feanor when he arrived in Middle Earth and killed all those orcs and gave the balrogs a run for their money.

My favourite battle cry is either:
'Baruk-Khazad. Khazad-ai-menu' or
'Aure entuluva.'

My fault Voralphion,
That's what I get for trying to post intelligently so late.
