I'll tell you who I would have taken. Thorin Oakenshield. He was the man. I mean he was a leader among dwarves. He was battle-ready at all times and was always ready to chop some Orcs head off. I can think of no other person in the Hobbit that I would rather be. He died for his cause and thats why I respect him so much. So what about you? What do you say? Posts: 0

I'll take the easiest one... Gandalf... Lets see he made a burglar and a hero out of a hobbit, made events move so that Smaug would be taken out of the picture should Sauron ever rise again, chased Sauron out of Dol Guldur and was there to narrate the whole battle of 5 armies scene (Look its the Eagles!). It was a pretty productive year he had there, and I forgot to mention that he slew 3 trolls and the king of the Orcs. He also started to get a heads up on Bilbos little ring. Plus it would be cool to be able to remember life as a maiar back in the Undying Lands. The Westward Road Only in the West does your hope lay.

Also, I would be pretty nifty to be in possesion of Narya, the Ring of Fire, one of the Three, and have such great powers and respect. And, later, he departs over sea to Aman to become a Maia once more.

Thranduil would be my third and Elrond second. At the risk of a whole new thread; Gwaihir I have a hard time seeing that Gandalf ceased being a Maia when in Middle-Earth that took on limitations and had to forgo some of his powers is clear.Melian even though she married [as no other Maia is said to have done {leaving the Bombadil question aside } is never as I recall mentioned as anything other than retaining her original 'race'.Her title is always Melian the Maia. Indeed the first paragraph of the chapter on the sindar in the 1977 Silmarillion is devoted to how Melian lifted the Elves of her and Thingol's realm to the highest of any community of Elves outside of Valinor.
Edited by lindil at: 8/8/00 2:19:41 am |

In fact, he was responsible for the entire adventure. And he did posess the Ring Narya already during that journey. He recieved it from Cirdan the Shipwright when he arrived in Middle-Earth around the year T.A. 1000. The Hobbit took place in 2941-2, almost 2000 years after Gandalf got Narya. Gandalf was still a Maia, of course, during his time in Middle-Earth, as can be seen when he dies and then returns to life the next day by the Dimrill Stair. Maybe I should have said that Gandalf will make it known to all that he is a Maia in Valinor. Elrond, Galadrial etc, and the other Ainur of Aman will know of course, but some of the elves and the hovvits will not.

This looks like an ancient, but fun, thread. I couldn't resist being Bilbo. First, I love hobbits. Second, of all the characters in the book, he is the one who grew and matured the most. The Bilbo at the end of the book is extremely different than the one at the beginning.
Bilbo is called upon to show mercy, understanding, and even a bit of burglary, and he excels at them all, despite the initial skepticism of the dwarves. If you look at UT, you really get a sense of what an adventurous young hobbit he'd been, and how he'd lost much of that until Gandalf came along to set him on the road again to chasing after Elves. And look at all I'd have to look forward to in the future--adopting Frodo, visits from the dwarves, a great send off from the Shire, living in Rivendell, and finally the Blessed Lands--a little of everything. sharon, the 7th age hobbit |
thorin because he was the king of the dwarves
i'd want to be bilbo.

I don't think I'd like to be Gandalf, Frodo, or Strider, because those three have the most to worry about (not that the other travelers don't have anything to worry about, I realize they do). Gandalf's powerful, but he has to watch out for the hobbits. The same with Strider. Frodo has those ringwraiths after him . . . so I think I'd like to be Legolas, or Pippin, or Merry.
I think I'd settle with Gandalf. Or..if at all possible, I would be Smaug, and I'd put on a huge mythril shirt...just to be safe.
This is an old thread! It predates my death by some two years.
The magnificent Thorin Oakenshield, of course. |
I would probally be Gandalf too. He has magic and he never got in much danger besides the Goblins. So I would be Gandalf.
Gollum because eventually he would save all of Middle-Earth by destroying the one ring! (despite how ironic it was)
Withought a doubt my Favorite character in the Hobbit was none other than the all might Beorn. HE WAS THEE MAN
