Balrogs: Good or Terrible

I want to know what you think about Balrogs

Lathriel 02-17-2003 12:04 PM

Balrogs scare the crap out of me.No wonder since they were servants of Morgoth(Silmarillion).Especially when I read lord of the Rings the first time and the fellowship was in the mines of Moria a shiver went down my spine as I read about the balrog. Balrogs also helped destroy the fair city of Gondolin. So I am happy Gandalf destroyed the last one.

i thought they were cute

eleanor_niphredil 02-17-2003 12:35 PM

Yeah, they are cute, right up until you have one in front of you, roaring and breathing fire, intent on making you into an XL Kebab! At that time, I think even a hobbit would scare the crap out of me!

lol. ok, so theyre cranky... but wouldnt we all be if we sat in a fire 24/7?

Galadrie1 02-17-2003 03:09 PM

Perhaps all they need is a hug? (Of course, you'd have to wear some sort of fire proof suit to hug a Balrog.... )

I like balrogs. I find them really scary (second only to the Ringwraiths) and fun to think up mental images of. I do feel sorry for them, being so hated and feared by everyone. They just need a hug, like everyone else.

And, after all, without balrogs we'd never have that thrilling "Wings or no wings?" debate to ponder over, would we?

I like them, every one has a different mental picture of what they think they look like, unlike say the Nazgul.

Melkor too? So, that's where the Valar got it wrong!

avarrogion 02-17-2003 08:42 PM

It feels so good to be back at the Downs after sometime....
The Balrog is definately a good guy...maybe it`s because i am attracted to LOL

XPhial 02-17-2003 08:53 PM

Balrogs need prozac...nuff said

Gorwingel 02-17-2003 09:20 PM

I bet under all of that fire and wrath, there is a sensitive being who all they want is to find someone to love them. It is not their fault that they are terrible, it is Morgoth's fault for bossing them around.

Vardamar 02-17-2003 09:36 PM

Aww Balrogs are soooo cute. I want a Balrog teddy bear!!

avarrogion 02-17-2003 09:59 PM

Yeah you are right Gorwingel under all that fire and ashes the Balrog is a nice person needing some company and he choose Gandalf but NO Gandalf have to defeat it...long live Balrog.
Balrog teddies anyone? *puts up a table with Balrog teddies*

Tinuviel 02-17-2003 10:00 PM

i think they're awe-inspiring beings though more on the negative sense in that they inspire fear.balrog, i believe, refers to the fire spirits who served morgoth. it was their choice to serve morgoth that earns them my distaste. but not all fire spirits are evil.the one who carries the vessel of the sun in fact is one (the tale is told in the silmarillion), though i remember not her name. she was one of the faithful, one of those who in their integrity glorify the essence of fire

avarrogion 02-17-2003 10:04 PM

One thing thou i would pay to see Balrog vs
Sauron....ever wonder who would win? Also ever wonder if Balrogs could fly?

obloquy 02-18-2003 01:59 AM

Balrogs don't 'roar'.

Faenaduial 02-18-2003 04:12 AM

The tale of how Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, hews down Fingon, High King of the Noldor, always makes me cry.

the witch king 02-18-2003 06:40 AM

Gothmog is realy 'kool' i wish there was more info on him, id love to see Gothmog vs Sauron would be great!

lathspell 02-18-2003 12:18 PM

Balrog's are quite cool... to see from an airplane!

Lathriel 02-18-2003 03:33 PM

If the Balrog doesn't burn the airplane first!!
Holland(Nederland) would probably be the best place for a Balrog to cool of. All that rain you know.

avarrogion 02-18-2003 08:03 PM

I was wondering can or cannot a Balrog fly....in the movie, PJ`s version of the Balrog was with wings...so can he fly?

Balrog wings ????? Balrog wings !!!! What`s this business about Balrog wings ???? Who says Balrogs have wings ??? I just dunno,so confused.

propagandalf 02-18-2003 08:44 PM

they're not disgusting
like Shelob.

i think it's cool that they make Legolas very nervous.

Lady Alasse 02-18-2003 08:59 PM

(Yay, first post)
Balrogs are kinda cool, but man are they ugly. And they have terrible breath. Just look at the Balrog in FotR, he roars, and flames come out. He needs to lay off the hotsauce...

Shy Hobbit 02-20-2003 09:48 PM

I'm one of the many who first saw the movie before reading the books. When the fellowship was in Moria and you could hear the balrog coming and see his flame glowing, I was terrified! But when he actually came out all I could think was ehh he's not so bad...kinda looks like a poodle/cocker spaniel. (Maybe I'm weird for seeing that resemblance but I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the film's balrog was cute

I was sad when he took Gandalf with him though

doug*platypus 02-21-2003 04:25 AM

Interesting to hear that, Shy, since I'm one of the many people who read the book before seeing the movies. FOTRrog was a bit disappointing, eh? They MORE than made up for that with TTTrog, though. They look so different! It's like that scene in Wayne's World where Wayne replaces the extra at the gas station because he's crap.

Bookrog (wow! cool name!) was much scarier. The anticipation was built up a lot better. And Legolas actually drops his arrow, he's so shocked. I think they'd be fun to go to a pub with, but would probably get into too many fights.

Shy Hobbit 02-21-2003 07:50 PM

It wasn't dissapointing, I was just suprised that he wasn't as terrifying as I thought. Now that I think about it, I watch the DVD and go: "Ohhh look, it's a poodle in a REALLY bad mood"
