Hey lady evenstar, I belatedely welcome you to the downs. The Necromancer was just a mysterious way of saying Sauron. Either at the time they didn't know it was Sauron, or they didn't want to name him at the time. I've always wondered what the actual defenition of the word is. It's greek, necro-meaning death. Necromancer is someone who uses sorcery for evil.

A Necromanancer is someone who controls death, just like a pyromancer controls fire. In this case, as stated above, the Necromancer was Sauron before he'd become a great power again. It was unknown who this person was until he revealed himself as the dark lord.

Well, techinically the White Council suspected it was him & drove him out of Mirkwood, but he fled to Mordor & then revealed himself as the Dark Lord .

No, Gandalf went to Dol Guldur to find out the Necromancer's true identity and found the White Council's worst fear true.

Quote:

'"Whatever were you doing there?" asked Thorin with a shudder, and all the dwarves shivered.
"Never you mind. I was finding things out, as usual; and a nasty dangerous business it was. Even I, Gandalf, only just escaped. I tried to save your father, but it was too late. He was witless and wandering, and had forgotten almost everything except the map and the key."'
From: the hobbit - An Unexpected Party.

The story is, if I'm correct, also mentioned in UT, but I haven't got the time to search for that now.

greetings,
lathspell

We had a discussion about the Necromancer in Books a while ago, and some interesting points came up. Click here to read it.

The Necromancer was Sauron, when he was but a spirit, living (almost) in Mirkwood and then he went back to Mordor etc (you must know all this by now) :)

Saruman for one

Saruman for one knew the Necromancer was Sauron. He discovered his servants searching near the Gladden fields, for the "one ring." At this time the One ring had been in Bilbo's posession, but no one knew that. When Saruman discovered this he did not tell the White Council, Saruman being head of the White Council knew but he didn't warn any of the others. Of course later on Galadriel and Saruman drove out the Necromancer.
