Barrow Wrights (sp?)
my friends and i were wondering...what are barrow wrights? the whole part in the barrow-downs in FotR really confused us.
|
from this sites The Middle-Earth Encyclopedia
Barrow-wights Spirits sent out of Angmar and Rhudaur by the Witch King to haunt the burial mounds of Tyrn Gorhad, the Barrow-Downs. It was a barrow-wight that captured the four hobbits as they skirted the Downs by causing a wave of confusion and cold to pass over the party. It then imprisoned them in the tomb it haunted and attempted to sacrifice them. The wight appeared as a pale arm and spoke in a quiet, haunting murmur. Hope this helps |
*shudders everytime the Middle-earth "Encyclopedia" is used.* It's best to learn things from the pen of the author himself. That "Encyclopedia" isn't the most accurate.

Though criminally incomplete, our Encyclopedia is still my favorite!

I agree, BW. I'm particularly fond of the Elrond entry. Pure genius.

*coughs to make red's acquaintance*
Humour me a bit, red and let this recently dead downer in on the joke. Did you write the entry on Elrond? *runs off to read it now* Bethberry |
So, red, are you saying that the Elrond entry is a breath of accuracy in an otherwise error-filled compendium?
|
Oh, dear!! I made a big mistake. I missed the part about "this site's" Encyclopedia. I was thinking about the one published in book form. I don't even remember who wrote it. Forgive me! No, this site's Encyclopedia is very nice if, like you said, a bit incomplete. Though I suspect that won't always be the case, right?

Thanks, red. I hoped you might have been talking about another Encylopedia since you are one of our esteemed contributors
