A couple of my favorites:

"'What are you going to do then?' asked Pippin, undaunted by the wizard's bristling brows.
'Knock on the doors with your head, Peregrin Took,' said Gandalf. 'But if that does not shatter them, and I am allowed a little peace from foolish questions, I will seek for the opening words.'"

"'Fool of a Took!' he growled. 'This is a serious journey, not a hobbit walking-party. Throw yourself in next time, and then you will be no further nusiance. Now be quiet!'"

Dúnadan 06-16-2002 08:44 PM

"What did you blush for, Sam?" said Pippin. "You soon broke down. Anyone would have thought you had a guilty conscience. I hope it was nothing worse than a wicked plot to steal one of my blankets."

~Pippin

If you were to ask me to give all my favorite qoutes I would ask you,

"did you want me to qoute the Movie or all the Books?"

The Barrow-Wight 06-17-2002 09:33 AM

Tar-Elendil, that is also one of my favorite quote. Eomer's fury is so awesome at that point.

Let's keep quotes here from THE BOOKS, please.

mark12_30 06-17-2002 09:43 AM

Eomer's song:
Out of dark, out of doubt, to the day's rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing
To hope's end I rode, and to heart's breaking
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!

(for the rest of these, check them, haven't my book on me

Eowyn on the Pelennor fields:
No living man am I! You look upon a woman!

Frodo to Sam, Grey Havens:
Come now, ride with me.

(?)Gloin to Frodo and Frodo's response:
You were very fond of Bilbo, were you not?
Indeed yes, I would rather see him than all the towers and palaces in the world.

My fave. is "Are you Frightened", "Yes", "Not nearly Frightened enough."

Well, not my favourite, but the most timely (on seeing my daughter back from the country yesterday): "I hope the thinning process will not go on indefinitely, or I shall (that is, she will) become a wraith".

It is best to love first what you are fitted to love, I suppose: you must start somewhere and have some roots... - Merry

...take counsel with thyself, and remember who and what thou art. - Mandos

Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil. - Gandalf

Yet it is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. - Gandalf

Personally I have no hopes at all, and wish I was safe back at home. - Bilbo

This is Bilbo's walking-song that Frodo modified to sing during his last days in ME, just before they set sail. It brings me to tears every time I read it.

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate;
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun.

"And as if in answer, from down below, coming up the road out of the valley, voices sang..."

Guinevere 06-19-2002 08:20 AM

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

In the book this is in the chapter "the shadow of the past", but in the movie Gandalf sais it in Moria.

Estelyn Telcontar 06-19-2002 04:21 PM

This is one of my very favorite quotes:

Quote:

“Mercy!“, cried Gandalf. “If the giving of information is to be the cure of your inquisitiveness, I shall spend all the rest of my days in answering you. What more do you want to know?” “The names of all the stars, and of all living things, and the whole history of Middle-earth and Over-heaven and of the Sundering Seas,” laughed Pippin. “Of course! What less? But I am not in a hurry tonight.”

Luthien_ Tinuviel 06-19-2002 06:41 PM

Welcome to the Downs, Guinevere! Estelyn, that is one of my favorites, too. I also like the song in my signature.

Remmirath 06-20-2002 11:18 PM

Wow, right now I can only hunt up one

"These are indeed strange days," he muttered. "Dreams and legends spring to life out of the grass." Eomer, at the Three Walkers.
