How do elves re-embody?

Hello everyone, it's my first post, and i have a question:

if elves were slain, Valar will restore them, right? but by how?

thanks in advance.

Mae govannan Tin. Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo (A star shines on the hour of our meeting.)

Welcome to the downs. Post often.

As for your question, I have wondered the same thing.

Thanks Joy!

maybe i should make the question more clearly, when i read HoME12 the part about the return of Glorfindel,i got a impression that they've been given a new body by Valar; but now after read HoME10, the re-born part, it seems through new parents.

What in HoME 10 are you referring to?

As to your question, the Valar seemed to do it.

tin 06-02-2002 01:26 AM

Durelen:

HoME10 is 'Morgoth's Ring'; on 'of re-birth and other dooms of those that go to manaos'

Quote:

Now the Eldar hold that to each elf-child a new fea is given, not akin to the fear of the parents....;and this fea either did not exist before birth, or is the fea of one that is re-born.

Wasn't Glorfindel unique that he was the only one who didn't get a new body, but kept his old one? If that is true, then dead elves must be re-imbodied through birth.

Welcome to the Downs, Tin!
Have fun here and post lots!

Oh... Yeah, right. Welcome, tin. Have fun. (What? What do mean that my welcome is late and not very enthusiastic? Did you expect me to come dancing in and shout aloha?)

Oh... You're welcome. (Now what? So I didn't dance around of joy! Ofcourse I think tin is welcome, but there is no need to go to the extreme!)

No, at least not according to JRRT's latest writings. In the earlier versions, Elves were indeed reborn in their descendants, but Tolkien later decided that this was inconsistent with the metaphysics of Arda. He thus decided that Elves are instead reincarnated by the Valar, who are capable of constructing a new body for them, identical to the former one.
