Elven Clothing
Okay, so I'm designing my outfit (not a costume, thank you) for TTT, when it comes out, and I'm wondering:
What do female elves wear? I know what Arwen wears, and that's not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for something outdoorsy, if you get the picture. Help, please!!! |
Probably anything with a Renaissance twist, I picture flowing sleeves on them. You can find patterns or design your own.
One thing for sure is that it should not be too revealing, I don't think they would've shown too too much skin Not that you would make a revealing dress, it's just that I work at a living history museum and they always stress this to us. |
Thanks Tigerlily! I sincerly doubt my parents would let me wear anything even slightly revealing, so I'm good with that.

Hi, I'm doing the same thing but I'm dressing up as my favorite character, Legolas. I have the directions to make the ears and already know how to do the hair. Does anyone know where I can find a pic of legolas from the front???????? I mean, like without his hands up or anything. Or do you know where I can find a design of his? Thank you. Can you PM your responses to me?

So call me obsessed I dressed up for the first and will dress up for the rest of the movies.
But the elven costumes on the movie were great (although im not to fond of Arwens riding costume). I Imagined there clothes to be really rich like. Deep or warm colors and bright whites and purples (NO PINK) |

Once again, Tolkien himself answers your question. Maybe you should read more. |
I'm going to have to go with obloquy on this one. As always, his logic is faultless.

You've got to be kidding, obloquy. Naked? [ June 12, 2002: Message edited by: The Silver-shod Muse ] |
obloquy doesn't kid.

I know you're not looking for a costume , Elenya, but here's a site that gives some general description of what elves wear and such.
So here's a link. I hope it'll help you or give you some tips to go on: http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/ |
Hmm, I've been dressing as Dracula's bride in the winter months and an elf in the summer on and off for a few years and my interpetation in Medieval, circa 1300 but I feel it is wrong and should be more celtic. It's just how you feel I guess. I for one have no intention of frolicking naked anywhere. I reckon elves can choose whatever image they like as long as it makes them seem 'otherworldly'. This is no help is it? Sorry, I'll go away.

If I had the guts I'd dress up like an elf or a Celt. I just don't want anyone to think I'm a Gothic because Gothics often get blamed for most of the bad things that go on around here.
Maybe I'll start dressing like a Mongol... [ June 15, 2002: Message edited by: The Silver-shod Muse ] |
I'd agree with Tigerlily - anything Renaissance, or late-Medieval - I say that only because the Renaissance was the time for a lot of uncomfortable fashion crazes like farthingales and those Spanish skirts that were so wide you couldn't get through a door unless you turned sideways. Somehow (and I'm speaking as a total amateur here) Elves do not strike me as being big fans of whalebone in their clothing; uncomfortable, impractical and hot, not to mention dangerous when you live in someplace like Mirkwood or Lothlorien, whose borders are under almost constant siege and where the ability to move quickly is a good thing. Basic Medieval should do fine - overdress, underdress, possibly cloak and braided hair, since part of not being revealing meant not showing too much of your hair, either - not wearing it loose or anything like that. But Tolkien didn't say much about that one way or the other, and in the movie (not canon of course, but still a nice thing to check) they showed them with loose hair and it looked really good and convincing.
