Into the west (song)
 

Sorry, I have again a question, the song, into the west (which is a very beautiful song) was that written by tolkien? And what intention was behind that, is that refering in particular to galadriel, although it would also apply to gandalf, which never really wanted to leave aman..., maybe even to frodo, but no, aman was not his home.

Tolkien wrote several songs, in which bookes are they stated?

That song was written for the movies and appears nowhere in the books. There is a song that Galadriel sings in the chapter "Farewell to Lórien" that has some similar emotional themes, but they are not the same. Tolkien's songs are throughout both LotR and the Hobbit, but only in verse form. During Tolkien's lifetime, a composer named Donald Swann set a number of them to music in a song cycle called The Road Goes Ever On, which is still in print. The setting for "Namarië" was based around Tolkien's own rendering of the tune (which strongly resembles Gregorian chant). Many other songwriters (myself included) have written settings for Tolkien's verses, but there is no single compendium of available recordings that I am aware of.

Anyone wishing to listen to Tolkiens poems or songs committed to music would probably start with The Tolkien Ensemble, At Dawn In Rivendell (featuring Sir Christopher Lee). Other CDs in my collection feature The Hobbitons (Songs from Middle-earth) and James A. Stark (Songs of Middle-earth). I would also like to add my praise for Into the West.

Tolkien wrote all the poetry/songs in the books, but some of them remind me of other, 'real' songs. One thing that really bothered me about the movies was that they didnt bother singing any of the songs. apparently I was wrong. when does this song you're writing about appear in the movie if you please? (Not the "leaves of gold" one, this one about Aman)

"Into The West" appears at the end of "The Return of the King"- I think in the end titles. It's beautiful and haunting.

I believe they play it at the end of 'Fellowship', not 'Return of the King'.

The singer, Annie Lennox, is from my home town.

The end of "Fellowship" is "May it Be" by Enya. "Into the West" comes at the end of "Return of the King."

The song is really very beautiful, the greatest is the choir version, but annie is great too, it was written for a cameraman (i believe) who died from cancer:(

But if you don´t know it, it really sounds as it was written in reference of galadriels history.
