Dwarves
Though elves have taken the glory from tolkiens work I am wondering if anyone here likes the dwarves better... I do :D
|
Dwarves have their fun moments... besides from hating almost every single Race at one point in time
if you don't beleive this its true. |
I don't know if they are more interesting than the Elves, but I am finding them increasingly interesting in their own right since re-reading The Hobbit recently, and reading additional material on the War between the Dwarves and Orcs and the section in Unfinished Tales on Gandalf's version of the beginnings of the Quest to destroy Smaug.
Their slightly greedy nature seems to add an element of interest--some times the Elves almost seem too perfect. I am beginning to think that a movie of The Hobbit might be pretty good after all (obviously if handled well)... |
I'm interested in why every Dwarf in fantasy lit is virtually the same.
"We are skilled in craft and mining." No kidding? Just once I'd like to read about the Dwarf who hit his thumb with his hammer. That would be different. :D |
Just because its on my mind...
Dwarves Vs Elves - Sacking of Menegroth by the Dwarves of Nogrod Dwarves Vs Ents - Dwarves take up axes againest Ents on Mt. Drom(?) Dwarves Vs Men - Angered greatly at Men of Rohan for slaying Scatha the Worm and taking their treasure while only getting a Tooth Necklace. Dwarves Vs Orc - you should all know this, if not, the War of Dwarves and Orcs in Moria Dwarves Vs Easterlings - always battling each other due to Saurons intervention there are more examples for sure, but i'm just saying that the Dwarves tend to have a grudge |
Come on guys; the dwarves claim that they were taught by Aule in person, as a race; they seem to have magical abilities; the dwarves are the only ones that do not become wraiths by using the rings of power; they are the most skilled race in the making of metal. According to their lore:

Once, there was a Dwarf named Bob. Bob was nothing like the other Dwarves around him. All of them were big, hearty fellows who would mine gold and make tools all day while drinking around fires at night, but Bob was exceptionally clumsy, kept burning himself, falling down, bonking himself on the head, and other such things. One day, a big monstrous Dragon attacked the Dwarves' hall. The Dwarves tried to kill it with their axes, but the dragon was too strong for them. Bob, the only one left, tried to swing his axe, but got himself in the foot. The Dragon promptly died from laughing too hard. Yes, Dwarves are portrayed too "stereotypically," though there were some interesting characters in The Hobbit and Gimli was pretty dynamic. I guess they may simply be underused. |
