Which book is your favourite?

Hello everybody!

Which of the six books in the LotR is your favourite? Mine is book one, the first half of the Fellowship of the Ring, where we meet Frodo, Sam and all the rest. I love the description of Bree and the adventure with Tom Bombadil. I don't think anything compares to meeting Strider for the first time and mistaking him for a villain.

Aye indeed.

But my favourite one is the "Return of the King", because of its battle-sequences and its suspence ,no one could ever forgot the fight for Minas-Tirith or the Destruction of the Dark Lord or the Crowning of the new King .

The first half of FOTR was good with the Old Forest, the Barrows, and of course the meeting of Tom Bombadil, but my personal favorite would have to be the first half of TTT. Thats when we see the return of Gandalf, the very slow and forgetful but wise Treebeard and of course The battle at Helms Deep.

FOTR Book 2, ahhh, the time of Boromir. Being that he is my favorite character and it's so much fun to talk, and learn, about the complex mind of this controversial Fellowship member. :)

The CbC seems to have taken its toll on you, Boromir88... :)

As for me, it's RotK...the time for a mighty woman like Eowyn to shine and show what she can do...and get what she deserves in the end. With her being one of my favorite character and having been in a situation similar to hers, I love reading how she handles circumstances. Oh, I can hardly wait for CbC to discuss RotK!!!

My favourite book is Book 2, for its description of Boromir.
A close second is Books 5 and 6, for one very special Steward.

If I had to choose one, then Book 1. One main reason is that the rest of the story is still to come. ;) But I also think that it includes some of Tolkien's most beautiful writing. The landscapes are so vivid, they resonate with earth magic; The Old Forest, the Withywindle, and of course, The Barrow Downs. When I read of these places it makes me want to get out and go for a walk in the woodlands and have adventures visiting ancient barrows and stone circles. And there are all those Hobbits of course.

I agree with Lalwendė on all counts. :D Also because of the Nazgul in that part, and we get to meet Gildor, Aragorn, and Glorfindel.

I think it is hard to pick just one of the books, but if I had to then I would have to pick the Return of the King. The climax of the battle of the Pelennor and Frodos struggle along with Aragorn becoming king is probably my favorite parts in all of the books. All of the loose ends come together and we have the ever so famous sailing into the west.

Love em all obviously :D but FotR has to be my fav one. I just love the beggining bits, the whole party and the journey to Bree and everything after.

Indeed it has, but I think I have stood my ground fairly well :) .

bit of a mix-up

I wasn't very clear in the opening of my thread, so I'll re-phrase it now.

Each novel in the LotR trilogy is actually two books.

The Fellowship of the Ring
1) Introduces the story and some characters.
2) The quest begins, and we've met the rest of the heros.

The Two Towers
3) The fellowship is broken, and it follows Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Merry and Pippin
4) Set in the same time frame as book 3 but it follows Frodo and Sam.

The Return of the King
5) Follows Aragorn, Gandalf and friends.
6) Follows Frodo, Sam, Gollum and enemies, also concludes the novel.

Well, I love all parts of LotR so it's difficult to chose one...
but my two faves are the first and the 5th book.
The first because of the great describtion of the landscape and the meeting with strider. For the 5th I don't have a real reason it's just the one I enjoy reading most.

i know you mean book in the trilogy, but the book that is often over looked is The Hobbit. that is my favorite book. its written on a much less serious scale and it is funnier. it has a lot of the same detail about the landscape and it is just a wonderful book. it gives the background to LotR.

as for book in the trilogy, i must say that i like book 5. it shows the rise of the different people. here you see Aragorn accept his position as king when he goes into the Paths of the Dead. you also see a side of Merry and Pippin that you didnt expect. they become brave warriors and doo all they can to help. you see Theoden returned to himself and ruler of Rohan. you see Gandalf and his true power as he fights the nazgul. and yes the incrdible battle scenes help a lot and make things that much better.
