Peter Jackson in RotK

In an interview with a Chinese news reporter, Peter Jackson informed the reporter that he is "in the movie, but you'll have to search for me." Who do you guys think he appeared?
I think he might be one of the people drinking at Edoras, the Green Dragon... but when I watched the movie, I keep thinking that he's the orc chief dude...
A non-related comment: did you guys notice that the dude in the Green Dragon who had the big pumpkin was Andy Serkis?

Ainaserkewen 12-19-2003 04:08 PM

The chief orc for your info is the same guy who played Lurtz, the orc in FOTR who got his head chopped off by Aragorn.

Huh, I didn't even notice!
I didn't remember that PJ was gonna have a cameo, so I forgot to look for him. Next time I go I'll keep my eyes peeled, though!
Abedithon le,
~*~Aranel~*~

BeeBombadil 12-19-2003 04:47 PM

Jackson was on screen for a split second as one of the Corsairs.
I did not notice that the pumpkin fellow was Serkis. I'll look when I go again on Sunday.

balrogman 12-19-2003 08:03 PM

yes pj was the corsair who says something along the lines of "come on!"
the cheif orc guy reminded me of the deformed dude from the goonies
and one of the guards of the beacon in minas tirith was one of the guys from weta...he has an interesting eyebrow lol

whoa! are they long-lost bros or something?!

Cinderella 12-20-2003 01:52 PM

Haha honetly, everytime he came on screen I mumbled something about the Goonies, I wonder if they did that on purpose...

Oddwen 12-20-2003 08:51 PM

I heard that PJ cut out a twenty-minute scene of himself fighting with a major character. :P
Wasn't Sean Astin in the Goonies? Maybe it's a hint to that.

Scott 12-20-2003 10:23 PM

The Goonie's-orc captain is just another page in Peter Jackson's tome of tongue-in-cheek jabs within his movies.
You can also trace one of the big-eyed young girls in the streets of Minas Tirith through the whole trilogy: as a young hobbit at Bilbo's party and as a young Eorlinga being held by her mother in the Glittering Caves.

Raefindel 12-21-2003 12:34 PM

You would be correct in your belief, Lord of Angmar.

quote:
No, but I noticed a certain old woman with a black hood miraculously beat the Rohirrim from Edoras to Minas Tirith.

Now that I didn't see. Good eye, Silver-shod Muse.

quote:
You can also trace one of the big-eyed young girls in the streets of Minas Tirith through the whole trilogy: as a young hobbit at Bilbo's party and as a young Eorlinga being held by her mother in the Glittering Caves.

Along with her brother: they are hobbit children, children in the Glittering Caves, and then children in Minas Tirith. They are Billy and Katie Jackson, Peter Jackson's children.

quote:
and one of the guards of the beacon in minas tirith was one of the guys from weta...he has an interesting eyebrow

I noticed that... it's Christian Rivers, the Pre-viz specialist who drew the storyboards, I think.
I also seemed to recognize quite a few of the soldiers from past battles.... It seemed to me that some of the Rohirrim doubled as soldiers of Gondor.... Kind of annoying, that.

doug*platypus 12-21-2003 05:14 PM

quote:
Kind of annoying, that.

True! The first time I saw PJs kids in Rohan I was fuming! It really takes away from the realism of the films to have what are obviously the same people appearing as different characters. Lawrence Makoare appearing as both Lurtz and Goonie is fine, since it's pretty durn hard to tell. But I guess they're PJs movies, and if he can't give himself and his kids cameos in each then I suppose it's a little sad. If only Katie wasn't so obvious!!!
Pete himself is definitely the captain of the corsairs. But I notice on the audio commentary for The Two Towers that apparently he isn't one of the Dunlendings?! At least that's what he said, but in that case I can't see where in TTT he appears (and I'm sure he'd be in there somewhere!).
Although it is nice to see all these people (Alan Lee included) getting in front of the camera, I don't like the amount of believability you lose by doing so. That's precisely the reason that David Bowie wasn't cast as Elrond. If you spend all your time going, "Ooh that's PJ", "That's PJ again", "That's the guy who did the storyboards" and "That's the 2nd assistant to the head driver of the catering company" then it becomes pretty %#%$ing distracting!

The Saucepan Man 12-21-2003 06:35 PM

quote:
did you guys notice that the dude in the Green Dragon who had the big pumpkin was Andy Serkis?

No. He was the guy who played Ted Sandyman in the FotR EE. Presumably because the Hobbit with the big pumpkin in RotK is Ted Sandyman.

quote:
Lawrence Makoare appearing as both Lurtz and Goonie is fine, since it's pretty durn hard to tell.

He plays the Witch King too, although it is equally hard to tell. Potato-head's resemblance to that thing from the Goonies (not a film that I have seen) is remarkable. Personally, I had him down as John Merrick without John Hurt's schlurping voice.

quote:
Pete himself is definitely the captain of the corsairs.

Indeed he is. I suspect that he has a bigger part to play in the EE.

quote:
The first time I saw PJs kids in Rohan I was fuming!

Oh, but they are so darn cute, you can't blame the man. I'd do the same.

quote:
Although it is nice to see all these people (Alan Lee included) getting in front of the camera, I don't like the amount of believability you lose by doing so.

Only for us book/film obsessives. I bet that 90% of people who saw all three films never noticed.

Kalimac 12-21-2003 07:26 PM

It might sound weird, but I make it a point never to watch the "Behind-the-movie" features where you find out stuff like how the illusions were done (I mean, I know there were illusions, but seeing them spelled out makes it hard for me to watch the scene again without thinking "Frodo's really standing on a soundstage yelling at a painted basketball"). Same goes for finding out who does cameos. I have no idea what Alan Lee et al look like and so, happily, all those guards and so forth don't bother me at all; they could be anyone .
PJ's daughter is the only one I've noticed on my own; his son blends into the background a good bit, but it's hard to miss that enormous brown pair of headlights. It bothered me a little bit, but not too much, mostly because she doesn't actually do much, and conceivably there is more than one big-eyed small girl running around in Middle Earth. If she had to talk, making it unavoidably obvious that it was the same person, I'd mind a good bit more.

You see a man throwing a spear (or rock)down at the uruk-hai as they move up towards the gate. I think that's PJ.

Olorin_TLA 12-22-2003 06:27 AM

Pumpkin guy ain't Sandyman.

BeeBombadil 12-23-2003 12:56 PM

In TTT, Jackson is a chain mailed soldier who hurls a rock over onto the Uruk-Hai. Barry Osborne is also a soldier in the Helm's Deep battle.
Andy Serkis does NOT play the pumpkin guy...as far as I could spot, he's on-screen, with his own face, only as Smeagol.

Failivrin 12-23-2003 03:32 PM

i thought he hurled a spear? i was watching it the other day and i turned back to the screen and there was PJ at Helm's Deep! i'd never seen him there before.
wow! i'm so chuffed i worked out the corsairs thing and here everybody knows! i saw that today.
i also recognised interesting eyebrow guy today.
i get pretty annoyed by Billy and Katie now. her wig in Rohan looked SO unrealistic!
i think they're both very sweet though. at their best in FOTR, perhaps?

quote:
I believe (though I may well be mistaken), that that young girl is Peter Jackson's daughter.

You believe correctly (as Raefindel said) .

quote:
No. He was the guy who played Ted Sandyman in the FotR EE. I went & saw it after being told that Serkis played the 'pumpkin guy', & there is a rather striking resemblance...

quote:
but in that case I can't see where in TTT he appears (and I'm sure he'd be in there somewhere!).

As I think someone else said on this thread, he hurls a spear at the Uruks near the front gate of Helm's Deep (he has a chain mail hoodie-type-thingy, so he's harder to recognize ). I also thought he was one of the wild men...

quote:
The Goonie's-orc captain is just another page in Peter Jackson's tome of tongue-in-cheek jabs within his movies.

Um, I kind've doubt that. I think PJ was just trying to make the orc look grotesque & it didn't work out very well.

quote:
The first time I saw PJs kids in Rohan I was fuming!

Well, I certainly wasn't fuming when I saw them in TTT, but I do wish PJ would keep their appearances down a bit, perhaps. I think it's perfectly fine that he gave his kiddies some screen time in FotR, but I don't know about giving them more. Oh well, it really doesn't bother me much...

Estelyn Telcontar 12-23-2003 05:24 PM

Regarding the cameo appearances of Peter Jackson's children in all three movies - I can't say I blame him! If I were directing the movie of my lifetime, the biggest one I've ever done, and there was a legitimate place to put my children in it, I'd jump at the chance. Just think what memories that makes for when they see it in years to come!

Elvish Archer 12-23-2003 05:58 PM

I was watching our for this sort of thing when I went to see the RotK and I still didn't catch most of it. The black hooded woman for instance, was one that I missed however I did catch the little girl and the signal guard. I also beg to differ with the lot of you regarding PJ's role in the movie. I swear that he plays a Rider of Rohan, wearing the same mail hood that he wore in the TTT. (Yes, that's him that hurls the spear. He scores a hit, too ) He also weilds a battle axe like Ares himself.

In regards to the Andy Serkis/Ted Sandyman argument, I don't think that's him. In FotR EE, Sandyman, Sam, Sam's Gaffer, and an unkown hobbit are all sitting around a table at the Green Dragon. He says something along the lines of "Stay away from trouble and trouble will stay away from you." It doesn't look like Andy to me then.
Cheers! EA

The Only Real Estel 12-23-2003 09:10 PM

I really don't think that Sandyman & the pumpkin man looked all that much alike at all...

balrogman 12-23-2003 09:18 PM

yeah well regardless i dont think it was andy serkis
