Who is the best character in the movies?

My favorite character is probably Smeagol/Gollum, because he has such emotion behind him, and the way he is fighting with himself is heartbreaking, yet understandable.

Gimpel the Fool 09-16-2003 12:56 PM

I also have to say that Ian McKellan does a butt-kickin' job of playing Gandalf. He really brings the character to life.

Gimpel the Fool 09-16-2003 01:36 PM

I can't wait until December 17..."The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" is gonna be an awesome movie, and i can't wait to see Sean Astin's character "Samwise Gamgee" make one of the hardest decisions his world has to offer.

Gimpel the Fool 09-16-2003 01:39 PM

I also have to say that Orlando Bloom is awesome as Legolas. Oh, and I can't forget Elijah Wood, who makes Frodo all the more realistic.

John Noble as Denethor: he's excellent!! And very scary... I hide behind a chair whenever I watch the previews.

Scary... Almost as scary as when you said you were off of him for a while...
I really like Gollum/Smeagol to. He's much more humanlike than in the books.
Is this only for TT? Because Boromir is also really cool. Sean Bean plays him very well.
Bye bye!
Aethelwine.
[ September 17, 2003: Message edited by: Aethelwine ]

Meela your sigs rock!
I'd have to say Boromir, the constant inner turmoil thing.

quote:
Lol, we seem to be over-run by eny meeny siggys . & good ones at that...

I started off a trend
Yeh, Denethor scares me. But only a little bit. I'm torn between hiding and screaming, and sitting within an inch of the screen and drooling.
And I only went off him for a grand total of four hours, I think. It was two days, but I kept changing my mind.

Gimpel the Fool 09-17-2003 01:08 PM

This discussion is for all the movies, so it doesn't matter, in case you were wondering. I remember reading an article on Smeagol saying that they likened his image to that of an 800 year-old heriod addict. let that be a lesson to us all, lol.

the phantom 09-17-2003 05:01 PM

I think everyone did a great job acting. I didn't like some of the character changes PJ made, but the actors and actresses did a fine job doing what they were asked to do. After the first two movies, I think I've been impressed the most by Sean Bean as Boromir.

Elladan and Elrohir 09-17-2003 09:16 PM

As far as which actor looks the most like his character, I would have to say Viggo Mortenson as Aragorn. He IS Aragorn!
The dude who plays Elrond (can't remember what his name is right now) is awesome too. They're all awesome!

Gorwingel 09-17-2003 11:18 PM

Frodo is my personal favorite in the film just because I feel so sorry for the poor guy. The way that Elijah acts out the charater is different from what I though of the charater during the first time I read the books, but I still like it.
And Gandalf is my favorite because in regards to the books, his charater was right on. So in my opinion the two best charaters in the movies are Gandalf and Frodo, but I like all the others just as much too.
P.S. Elladan and Elrohir, the actor that played Elrond so well is Hugo Weaving

Grimkû the Blood-Axe 09-18-2003 12:12 AM

For me;
FotR: Legolas
TTT: Gollum/Smeagol
Gollums everything you would think he to be after reading the books. Whilst Legolas is just awesome. I also like the orcs for some reason but that doesnt mean i dont like seeing them get caned by the fellowship and company.

Aethelwine 09-18-2003 07:13 AM

Owh, I feel so stupid! How could I forget!
Miranda Otto plays Eowyn very good, to. Eowyn was always my favourite in the books, and she is just great in the movies. I like her expanded role as well.
Namarie!
Aethelwine.

Daisy Brambleburr 09-18-2003 12:52 PM

Boromir is my favorite book and movie character. Sean Bean was amazing and really made me look twice at book-Boromir. I realised he was much deeper and more complex than some people made out. At first he can come across as evil and like he's up to no good. He was played wonderfully and I have a soft spot for anyone with flaws in their character (like Boromir). I think it makes them more interesting. *Gibbers on with random praise for some time*
I just think Boromir's great. Jump on the bandwagon!

Eomer of the Rohirrim 09-18-2003 01:22 PM

I think Sean Astin's portrayal of Sam was the best performance, with Sean Bean as Boromir a close second and Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn third.
I also must disagree with a few of you and say that I thought Elijah Wood's performance as Frodo was quite good, but nowhere near the best.

Gimpel the Fool 09-18-2003 02:29 PM

Yay!! i'm happy my discussion has piqued the interest of so many people. Gosh, I think the guy who played Eomer (Karl something...forgot...) was right-on, if you understand me.

Meela 09-18-2003 02:47 PM

Karl Urban. Yeh, he was super! He had a great ferocity about him. Very warrior-like.

The Only Real Estel 09-18-2003 05:00 PM

I though Eomer was really well done. All my friend (not a man of many words) would say was, "That guys cool." I would've loved to see him in action at Helm's Deep (more than a few seconds), but oh well (that's a rather small change really if we're looking at TTT).

Knight of Gondor 09-18-2003 08:32 PM

Are we talking characters or actors?
They once asked many of the cast members about their favorite character, or which movie was their favorite. One of them (Sean Astin?) responded and said "That's like asking which CHILD do you like better?" I can't answer which character.
If we're talking which ACTOR, though, I'd have to say Sean Astin. He seems to be the most genuine of the group. The rest have been in many unpleasant movies, and Elijah Wood swears like crazy.

kboleen 09-19-2003 09:02 AM

Ian Mckellan did such a wonderful job as Gandalf in both movies. He really deserved the Oscar for his FOTR performance especially. I thought he pegged the difference between Gandalf the Gray (very wise and a little grumpy) and Gandalf the White (very wise and beyond grumpiness) to a "T".

samrohan 09-19-2003 10:09 AM

The actress whose name I cannot remember who portrayed EOWYN. Just brilliant.

The Only Real Estel 09-19-2003 10:12 AM

I think we're talking characters, although your reasons for liking them can tie in with how they're acted.

quote:
and Elijah Wood swears like crazy.

True, but don't most actors?

Aethelwine 09-19-2003 11:55 AM

quote:

The actress whose name I cannot remember who portrayed EOWYN. Just brilliant.

That was Miranda Otto, Samrohan. Indeed, she was great.
I'm also starting to like Karl Urban more and more every time I see TT.
Bye bye!
Aethelwine.
[ September 19, 2003: Message edited by: Aethelwine ]

Gimpel the Fool 09-19-2003 12:54 PM

quote:

this is for both the actors and the characters. if you feel like commenting on the actors, by all means, go right ahead. if the characters are what strikes your fancy, then have a ball and talk about them... whatever one feels like (as long as it pertains to Tolkien in some way, of course)

Iarhen 09-19-2003 01:00 PM

In order:
1. Galadriel. Cate does such a wonderful job... a truly regal look with beauty, sadness and power-induced respect.
2. Gandalf. Ian again... hes wonderful... Second only to Galadriel cause I love how Galadriel looks!
3. Samwise... such a faithful companion... such a great friend... but sometimes he acts like he was more than just a friend...
4. Gollum... tragedy embodied... Poor guy...
5. Arwen... beautiful...
5. Aragorn... hes just HOT!

Elentári_O_Most_Mighty_1 09-19-2003 01:40 PM

quote:
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and Elijah Wood swears like crazy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
True, but don't most actors?

Well Orlando does for a start, so probably yeah
I loved Éowyn in TTT, she brought the character alive for me.
FotR? That'd have to be Legolas.... But seriously no, I'd say Gandalf. Is it only me who always thinks of Gandalf as the Grey rather than the White? (Like just generally).

Diamond18 09-19-2003 01:53 PM

The question wasn't which actor you like best, rather which performance you thought was best (or which written characterization, I suppose, though performance usually affects us more). Discussions about the personal lives and habits of actors is discouraged on the Downs.
I was most impressed by Sam/Sean Astin, Boromir/Sean Bean, and Sméagol/Andy Serkis.
[ September 19, 2003: Message edited by: Diamond18 ]

Gimpel the Fool 09-19-2003 02:28 PM

Well, i must agree that Andy Serkis did awesome. I mean, he DID win the MTV Movie Award for best computer-generated character right? he's so life-like, it's amazing.

arianrod 09-19-2003 07:19 PM

Sam is my outstanding favorite in the books and Sean Astin did a excellent job of portraying his character, but in close second is Boromir (in both book and movie).

quote:
Boromir is my favorite book and movie character.
