Birth of the Uruk Hai
I personally never pictured the Uruk Hai to be what PJ made them, some monster born in a gigantic placenta from what looks like the earth under Orthanc.
I always thought that Saruman's Uruks were considered to be half man and half Orc, a created half breed from the rapings of the women of Rohan by the Orcs.
I am not sure where I got that idea but it seems to stick in my mind.
Does anyone else know more about this?

I'm not sure even Tolkien knew about that.

I always tried not to think about how they were created, but my imagination was better (actually worse! ) than the "stirring of the ooze" scene in the movie! That was a bit funky! (but more PG than "breeding pits" or something!
)
[ September 15, 2003: Message edited by: Liriodendron ]

I find the looks of the Uruks to be fine, but I agree this can't be how Tolkien envisioned them being created. In fact, he was very specific that Eru was the only one that could create life, so Saruman seemingly creating these things out of the muck could be argued to be the biggest contradiction to the Tolkien universe. Far bigger than any plot or character changes.
Having said that, it's an effective image and perhaps the blasphemy of it underscores Saruman's evil even more. I agree with Liriodendron, my imagination as to how Saruman breed humans and orcs is far worse than what PJ concocted and is better left unsaid.
H.C.

Personally I like the way the Uruks were born in the movie. It was one of the coolest and one of my favorite scenes of the first movie.

The Uruks are half men and Orcs, but I don't think it says anywhere in the books about how they were created. And a sak of fluid that they are "spawned" in sounds a heck of a lot better than the women of Rohan being raped for an evil army. So, I'll give PJ that.

"PJ" sounds like in the Robin Hood cartoon where little John tries on a dicise(I didn't spell that right, but who cares) and makes up a nickname for Princ Jokn.
Myuhahaha!!

Kittygirl, it took me a long time to get used to referring to Peter Jackson as PJ, because of that!! I think of Prince John
Anyways, back on topic, it was gross the way they had the Uruks bred in the movie, but a whole lot better than it could have been. Although, when I see that, I think about how Saruman shouldn't have been able to create, and don't agree with that part of the movie. The Uruk Hai were bred, not created by Saruman. But, the image of that isn't too nice, so if they had to put it into the movie, it's probably better they did it the way they did. But I think they could have just left it out.
